RedHawks Seize Four First-Place Finishes

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--In its first meet of the outdoor season, four Miami University women's track and field athletes earned first-place finishes as the RedHawks competed at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational. There was no team scoring at the meet.
Freshman Tori Paterra won the javelin with a throw of 163-09, which was over nine feet better than her nearest competitor and places her second on Miami's all-time individual performer list and is the fourth-best throw in program history.
Junior Alexandra Roberts placed first in the shot put as Miami took three of the top four spots. Roberts' throw of 47-09.25 was the top throw, while junior Samantha Gable placed third (45-05.75) and Paterra placed fourth (43-07.75). Roberts also finished second in the discus with a throw of 139-07, while Gable placed third in the hammer with a throw of 165-05.
Junior Diona Graves captured the 100-meter dash in a personal best time of 11.93, which ranks her fourth on Miami's all-time performer list. Sophomore Layne Baggett won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.31m while sophomore Katie Scannell placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.57). Baggett, Scannell and Graves teamed up with freshman Ariel Johnson in the 4x100 meter relay, placing second in a time of 46.82.
Freshman Kori Tatman placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11-09.75, which ties her for fifth among Miami's individual top performers. The RedHawks had three individuals finish among the top three places in the long jump. Senior Magda Wikar finished second with a distance of 18-01.00, while freshmen Ashley Zaper and Allegra Ubbes finished in a three-way tie for third with jumps of 17-05.25. Wikar also finished second in the triple jump with a distance 36-11.75.
Also finishing among the top three in her event was junior Rachel Patterson, who finished third in the 1500-meter run in a personal best time of 4:28.84, which ranks her third among Miami's all-time individual performers and is the fourth-best time in the 1500 in RedHawk history.
Due to lightning in the area, the women's 200 meter dash, men's and women's steeplechase and the men's and women's 4x400 relays were not contested.
Miami returns to action next week as part of the team will compete at the Oliver Nikoloff Open in Cincinnati and others will compete at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo.
