Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk softball team fell in their final game at the Miami Invitational on Saturday to Purdue, 6-3. Miami drops to 14-10 on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 18-7.
Jessica Simpson held the high-powered Purdue offense without a hit during the first four innings. They broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth, added a run in the top of the sixth and hit a two-run home run to secure the victory in the top of the seventh. Simpson gave up 10 hits on the day, while striking out seven.
Miami got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Daniela Torres singled to centerfield to score Meghan Mawn. The RedHawks made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Allie Larrabee led off the frame with a double down the left field line and was lifted for pinch-runner Brandi Hernandez. Simpson put down a successful sacrifice bunt to move Hernandez to third. Kirstie Fehrenbach followed with a single up the middle to score her.
After Purdue had scored its three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead, Miami scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score back at three. Kristy Arbour led off the frame with a walk. Mawn sac bunted her over to second base. Two batters later, Torres doubled to left center to bring Arbour home.
Torres finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI. Fehrenbach was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Larrabee also went 2-for-3.
While the RedHawks' participation in the Miami Invitational is over, there are three games taking place at the Miami Softball Stadium on Sunday. Purdue takes on Marshall at 11 a.m. The Thundering Herd will then follow with a game against Ball State at 1 p.m. The event concludes with the Boilermakers against the Cardinals at 3 p.m.
Miami returns to action next weekend when it begins Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks travel to Akron for a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 1 starting at 1 p.m. Miami will then move on to Ohio to face the Bobcats in single games on Saturday, Apr. 2 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
