HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami opened defense of its 2009 and 2010 Mid-American Conference Tennis Championships Friday with a 5-2 victory over Toledo. The RedHawks won the doubles point, then took four of six singles matches to earn their 17th straight win in regular-season league play.
Miami (10-5, 1-0) gained a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf, ranked 66th in the country in the latest Campbell's/ITA computer poll, dropped the first game, then rallied for a 8-4 win over their opponents, while Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr got off to an early lead before hanging on 8-5.
Toledo (9-6, 0-1) captured the No. 3 tie in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).
In singles play, Martzolf and Danesis quickly added two points to the lead. Martzolf surrendered just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3, while Danesis posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2.
Toledo closed the gap when Christine Coffman defeated Miami's Nimisha Mohan, 6-4, 6-0, to make the score 3-1. However, Honiball got the RedHawks back on track with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 to clinch the team win. Anastasia Dracheva followed with the same scores shortly after for Miami's fifth point.
The Rockets closed the match with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) tiebreaker win by Amanda Border over Cara Wald.
Miami returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Eastern Michigan at the Riverside Racquet Club. Action begins at 2 p.m.
