MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Miami erupted for 16 runs on 19 hits in the opener of a doubleheader at Morehead State to earn a 16-3 victory, then saw the Eagles score a late run to win the nightcap 8-7.
With the split, the RedHawks stand 6-11 on the season.
In the opener, freshman Marcus Makuch delivered a career-high four hits, driving in three, while Ryan Kaup and Bryce Redeker added three hits each. Redeker's effort extended his hitting streak to 10 games, though it ended in the second contest.
Morehead State (3-16) opened the scoring in the second with a pair of unearned runs, but the RedHawks struck for their biggest inning of the season in the third. They plated eight runs on five hits, starting with an infield single by Jon Edgington. After a walk to Ryan Kaup, Bryce Redeker doubled in the first run.
Back-to-back errors tied the game at two and loaded the bases, allowing Nate Bowles to put Miami in the lead with a walk. Makuch singled through the right side to make the score 4-2 before Brad Gschwind earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right. Edgington singled again for an RBI before Kaup capped the scoring with a two-run double down the rightfield line.
The RedHawks added four more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to break the game open. Bowles delivered a one-out single to score Bryan Beaver before Makuch doubled in a run. An error on the Eagle shortstop allowed the third and fourth runs to score. Redeker doubled in Kaup, who led off the fifth with a single, to make the score 13-2.
Makuch had another RBI double in the eighth and Redeker hit a two-run homer in the ninth to add to the scoring. Morehead State countered with two runs in its last at-bat for its total.
Mac Thoreson (2-1) earned the win by scattering six hits over 6.2 innings. Both of the runs he allowed were unearned. Ryan Myers and Ryan Campbell completed the win getting the last seven outs.
Miami jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when Weldon led off the second with a walk and later scored on an RBI double by Makuch.
The Eagles responded with two runs in their half of the frame, parlaying a single, double and single into a 2-1 lead. They added two runs in the third and two in the fourth to chase Tyler Melling, who entered the game with a 0.79 ERA and a 17.2 scoreless-inning streak.
Despite being down 6-1 after four innings, Miami rallied. Kaup doubled with two outs in the fifth to close the gap to 6-3, but Morehead State answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The RedHawks tied the score with by scoring the next four runs. Adam Weisenburger singled to center, driving in Bowles, in the sixth, then Weldon crushed a pitch to right field after Redeker walked in the seventh.
Weisenburger led off the eighth with homer to center, making the score 7-7. But two singles around a walk led to the game-winner for the Eagles.
Joe Neff (0-1), who had spelled Melling, took the loss, despite allowing just two runs and four hits over 4.1 innings of relief.
Cody Gibson earned his first win of the season, while Matt Cartwright earned his second save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
The two teams conclude their weekend series with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
