AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Miami pounded out 11 hits, but three errors cost the RedHawks in a 7-4 setback to Air Force Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. Jon Edgington, Kyle Weldon and Ryan Curl each had a pair of hits, while Curl adding two runs batted in.
Air Force (5-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on back-to-back doubles by Matt Thorne and Garrett Custons. The Falcons added a run in the fourth with a pair of singles to start the frame before Miami conceded a run to turn a double play.
The RedHawks tallied a run in the fourth, but could have scored more. Edgington singled up the middle before Ryan Kaup blooped a double into left field. The shortstop gathered the bloop hit and fired home, catching Edgington in a run-down for the first out. After a groundout, Weldon singled sharply to center to bring home Kaup.
Air Force tallied an unearned run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to move ahead 5-1, but Miami answered in its half of the seventh.Marcus Makuch, Brad Gschwind and Nate Bowles each singled to load the bases. Curl launched a two-strike single to center field to bring home two runs and cut the deficit to 5-3. A bunt single by Edgington reloaded the bases, allowing Kaup to drive in a run with a walk. However, the rally ended there as Redeker fouled out and Weldon grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Air Force added two more unearned runs in the ninth for insurance, making the final margin 7-4.
Falcon starter Evan Albrecht improved to 4-0 on the season with a 10-strikeout effort, while Stephen Colangelo earned his second save. Miami starter Mac Thoreson (1-1), struck out seven against six hits for Miami.
The RedHawks conclude their spring break trip tomorrow afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. game against Illinois State.
