COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Miami University's JIM BERES had a respectable sixth-place finish in one-meter diving competition Thursday at the NCAA Zone C Championships in his hometown of Columbus, but has not yet qualified for the national meet.
Beres ranked second among 36 Midwest competitors with a score of 347.75 after six preliminary dives, but his total of 681.90 after the finals wasn't enough to automatically qualify him for advancement. A top-three finish in Friday's three-meter competition would assure him of a spot in the NCAA Meet in Minneapolis, Mar. 24-26.
Teammate Mike Grainger, a sophomore from Cincinnati, also qualified for the men's one-meter finals, but eventually finished 17th with a total score of 551.80.
Miami women's diver Lisa Werwinski from Canton placed 35th among 50 athletes in the three-meter event with a score of 229.30.
On Friday, Beres and Grainger compete in the men's three-meter diving event, while Werwinski will enter the women's one-meter event.
