OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University's men's swimming and diving team won its first six individual events then added two more plus a relay victory en route to posting a 132-104 triumph over Ball State at the Nixon Aquatic Center Saturday (Feb. 5).
Four of the six seniors who were swimming in their final home pool competition wound up with victories. Darin Smith (Bossier City, LA) won the 1000 freestyle (9:55.89), John Eick (Auburn, AL) touched first in the 50 freestyle, Ryan Neff (Chesterland) was victorious in the 400 individual medley and Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) placed first in the 200 butterfly. This class of Miami seniors has compiled a dual meet record of 12-7-3 at home.
"I was very pleased to see our seniors step up today," said head coach Pete Lindsay. "Young swimmers like Sam Childs, Tom Delves and Matt McKee also had some of their best swims this season."
Other RedHawk winners on Saturday included sophomore diver Chris Hoppler (Germantown, MD) who triumphed in both the one- and three-meter events.
Miami sophomore Sam Childs (Palatine, IL) edged out Ball State's Casey Schroeder by eight-one-hundredths of a second in the 200 freestyle.
The final RedHawk swimmer with an individual win was junior Brendan Melling (Solon) in the 200 breaststroke.
Relay-wise, Miami capped its team victory with a win in the 200 freestyle. LUKE RHODENBAUGH (Cincinnati), Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights), Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN) and Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) teamed up to clock 1:25.71.
The RedHawks (4-5-1) will now begin tapering for the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 4-6, in Carbondale, Illinois.
