Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - Playing against the current Mid-American Conference leaders, the women's basketball team remained competitive throughout, but fell to Toledo, 76-65, on Saturday afternoon. Miami falls to 10-13 overall and 2-8 in the MAC. The Rockets improve to 17-6 overall and 9-1 in the MAC.
Courtney Osborn led a balanced Miami attack with 14 points. Kirsten Olowinski just missed her fifth straight double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. Maggie Boyer and Rachael Hencke provided 12 points each.
The RedHawks raced to a 7-0 lead off layups from Hencke and Osborn, along with a three-pointer from Boyer. After Toledo got a layup to get on the board, a Hannah Robertson free throw and an Osborn three-pointer gave Miami what would be its largest lead at 11-2. The Rockets would answer with a 9-4 run to pull within four, but three layups by Olowinski along with an old-fashioned three-point play from Hencke would make it 25-16 with 8:56 remaining in the half.
Miami's shot would go cold as a 10-0 run gave Toledo its first lead of the contest at 26-25 at the 6:08 mark. Lillian Pitts answered with two jumpers as the lead changed back and forth three more times over the next minute. Her basket with 5:04 remaining in the period would be the final one of the half for the RedHawks however, as the Rockets closed the period on an 11-1 run to take a 39-30 lead into the break.
A jumper from Olowinski, along with a three-pointer from Boyer would help Miami close to within six at 45-39 with 17:04 left in the game. Each time the RedHawks would get within six or seven points, Toledo would find an answer to keep them from getting any closer. A three-pointer and a layup from Osborn, along with two free throws by Boyer made it 57-52 with 9:35 to go, but the Rockets answered with five straight points to bring the lead back to 10. Miami would get it as close as seven at 63-56 off of an Olowinski jumper, but the Rockets hit a perfect 9-for-9 down the stretch with their free throws to seal the 76-65 win.
The RedHawks shot 35.6 percent (21-for-59) for the contest, compared to Toledo's 48.2 percent (27-for-56). Miami was 18-for-20 (90 percent) from the free throw line. The Rockets outrebounded the RedHawks, 40-35, for the game.
Miami will be off for the next week, returning to the road next Saturday when it travels to Western Michigan for a 2 p.m. contest.
