Final Stats

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Miami softball team competed hard, but fell in the championship game of the UCF Courtyard by Marriott Invitational Sunday to Notre Dame by a 4-1 score. The RedHawks are now 3-2 overall, while the Fighting Irish are 5-0.

Notre Dame struck first with single runs in each of the first two innings off of starter Jessica Simpson. The big blow came in the bottom of the fourth when Alexa Maldonado hit a two-run home run to make it 4-1.

Miami scored its run in the top of the fifth inning. Kirstie Fehrenbach led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Jordan McElroy then singled down the right field line to bring her home. Simpson would keep the Irish off the board the rest of the game, but the RedHawks were unable to get another run home.

McElroy finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI. Fehrenbach was 1-for-2 with one run scored. Kayla Ledbetter was 1-for-1 with two walks. Simpson pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Miami returns to action next weekend (Feb. 25-27) when it travels to Louisville for the Red and Black Tournament. First up will be a game against Wright State on Friday at 5 p.m.
