LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Miami gave Kentucky everything it could handle Saturday afternoon, but a depleted lineup cost the RedHawks a chance at an upset, 4-3, at the Boone Tennis Complex. The RedHawks swept the three doubles matches, but could only win a pair of singles matchups.
Miami (5-4) jumped out to a quick start as Megan Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis won eight straight games after falling being 2-0 at No. 1. The duo improved to 8-1 this season with wins over teams from Michigan State, Kansas State and Kentucky in the total.
Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr won 8-4 at No. 2 to clinch the point, before Anastasia Dracheva and Cara Wald earned a similar win at No. 3.
Miami needed only to split the singles play to earn the win, but had to do so without freshman No. 4 player Nimisha Mohan, who is out with an injury. Dracheva put the RedHawks up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1, but the Wildcats (1-6) won the next four contests.
Honiball fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, before UK's Jessica Stiles evened the match at No. 2 with 6-3, 6-2, victory over Danesis at No. 2. The Miami junior was up 3-2 but dropped four straight games to end the set.
Martzolf and Parr both lost tough decisions, 6-4, 6-4, allowing the Wildcats to clinch the win. The action concluded with Wald earning a come-from-behind three-set victory. She dropped the first set to Misha Testerman 4-6, but rallied for 6-3 wins in each of the next two sets.
"This was a really close match today," Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu said. We competed really well... we were very agressive in doubles. UK fought hard, too, and played the important points really well. It was a good team effor, but we came up short."
Miami returns to action next weekend with a pair of neutral-site games in Louisville. The RedHawks face Austin Peay on Friday and North Texas on Saturday.
