As the 2011 calendar comes to a close, MURedHawks.com wants to take this opportunity to reminisce on some of the recent highlights.
The Athletic Communications staff recently sat down to compile a Top 10 listing of the biggest news stories for Miami Athletics. It was no easy decision, but we think we hit the mark on a great year.
Feel free to post your comments to @miamiredhawks on twitter and we will start sharing them.
Each day between Dec. 22 and Dec. 31, a different highlight of 2011 will be presented. Today, we list our No. 4 story of the year.
Miami Wins its First Mason Cup
DETROIT, Mich. -- No. 6 Miami captured the Mason Cup and its first CCHA Tournament championship by knocking off No. 12 Western Michigan, 5-2, on March 19. The RedHawks broke a 2-2 tie with three third-period goals to down the Broncos while also extending their unbeaten streak to a school-record 13 games.
Senior forward Andy Miele was named the CCHA Championship MVP after totaling six points on the weekend, including a goal and an assist in the final, extending his point streak to a career-best 17 games and his goal streak to seven games. Sophomore Reilly Smith was also selected to the All-Tournament Team after a pair of goals and a helper in the title game for his second three-point game of the championship. Junior defenseman Will Weber and junior goalie Cody Reichard also nabbed All-Tournament Team honors, with Reichard earning the win in net both nights, giving him 15 on the year, while making 14 saves Saturday.
