All three Miami University synchronized skating teams take to the ice this weekend at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. It is the season-opening competition for the RedHawk senior, collegiate and junior teams. All three teams have had a solid preseason preparing its programs and are ready to showcase them this weekend.
Miami's senior team skates its short program to "Blue Suede Shoes". The senior team's free skate program is themed Gypsy set to Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-Sharp Minor.
The collegiate team's competition program is choreographed to music by Beyonce.
The RedHawk junior team's short program is themed Cha-Cha and set to "Sway" and "Let's Get Loud," and its free skate program is themed Dancing in Paris.
Miami looks to better its finishes from a season ago at the Dr. Proter Classic. Last season, the collegiate team placed second, the senior team placed fourth and the junior team placed fifth at the Dr. Porter Classic.
Miami returns 32 skaters to its roster and boasts 21 newcomers. The RedHawk roster has 10 seniors, 13 juniors, 10 sophomores and 20 freshmen. The junior team returns two skaters, while the seven-time-defending national champion collegiate team returns 10 to its roster from a season ago. Five RedHawks are skating on both the collegiate and junior teams.
The senior team is comprised of 12 returners. Of its eight newcomers, four are freshmen skating on the senior team: Chandler Carroll, Maggie Maier, Ashley Mulhern and Vanessa Thornton. Senior Alyssa Sutter is the lone current RedHawk to have skated all four seasons on the senior team. Junior Taylor Walker has skated all three seasons on the senior team, while sophomores Katelyn Hilgers, Allison Markowitz and Ashleigh Ostin have all skated both seasons on the senior team.
