Captains' Corner is a weekly update from a captain or leader of one of the RedHawks' 19 teams that will run every other Thursday throughout the academic year. Today's update is from women's swimming and diving's Chelsey Bruington. Chelsey is a senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., who prepped at Mission Viejo High School. She is a diplomacy and foreign affairs major. Check back on Dec. 15 for the next edition of Captains' Corner with the women's basketball.
Being my fourth and final year at Miami, I had many mixed feelings about the upcoming season. I was both excited and nervous. Being a co-captain of the women's swim team is an amazing opportunity and a lot of hard work. The beginning of the season got off to a good start with both wins and losses at our dual meets, but in the last few weeks the girls have looked towards competing at the Miami Invitational.
The Miami Invitational has been my favorite swim meet over the past three years. It is exciting to see myself and my teammates swimming and diving better than they ever have. The Invitational my freshmen year was one of the best swim meets of my life, only surpassed by winning the MAC Championship three months later at Bowling Green. Everyone on the team banned together to win the meet and set multiple team and MAC records. Going into the meet this weekend, we are looking to do the same thing.
The best part of working with a team of almost forty women is the opportunity to get to know each one individually. We all push each other every day in order to become the best team fighting for the MAC Championship at Akron in February. The Miami Invite is a good way for the swimmers, divers and coaches to see where we are in the season and how we can improve. From all of the hard work we have put in the past four months, I know that my team will swim fast this weekend and have fun doing it.
Love and Honor,
Chelsey Bruington
