On Nov. 7, the Miami student body was provided the opportunity to rename the red and white bleachers located at the north end of Millett Hall for the upcoming men's basketball season. Last Monday, the contest was launched through Facebook and Twitter and closed last Tuesday evening at 10 p.m.
After reviewing the entries, the winning name was determined. Thanks to our contest winner senior political science and environmental science major Dave Solomon, the red and white bleachers will now be known as the "Hawk Squad" and a 50-foot long banner will hang from the top of the bleachers.
Solomon will receive a poster signed by the men's basketball team, entry into the bookstore shootout at a home game this season and an exclusive glow in the dark white shirt for the season-opening White Out against Dayton.
The "Hawk Squad" will receive balloons for the season opener to add to the atmosphere. In addition to the excitement of naming the student section, three new "fat head" signs have been added to the collection. Last year, the "fat heads" were Betty White, Snookie from MTV's Jersey Shore, and Justin Bieber. Don't miss your chance to be a part of the new and improved student section when it makes its debut Tuesday!
Thank you to all students who participated, and we will see you in the "Hawk Squad" on Nov. 15.
The RedHawks tip off the season on Nov. 15 as they host local rival Dayton at 7 p.m. The game has been dubbed a White Out and fans are asked to wear white to support the RedHawks.
Tickets for the season opener against the Flyers are $25 for adults and $15 for youth (under18). All general admission tickets are $15. Miami season ticket holders wanting to purchase additional tickets can receive a $5 discount on each ticket purchased for the Miami vs. Dayton game (up to the number of season tickets purchased). Red & White Club members also can receive a $5 discount on up to four tickets for the November 15 game.
The RedHawks' 14-game home slate includes four doubleheaders and features non-conference tilts against local rivals Dayton and Wright State and battles against Belmont, Evansville, William & Mary as well as an ESPN BracketBuster game in February.
