West Lafayette, Ind. -- Miami's men's swimming and diving team got first-place finishes from diver JIMMY BERES (Columbus), Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN) and Brendan Melling (Solon), but fell in dual meet action at Purdue, 170-127.
Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks (2-2) competed well against the Big Ten's Boilermakers, but Purdue's depth ultimately proved to be the difference.
Beres and diving teammates Chris Hoppler (Germantown, MD) and Mike Grainger (Cincinnati) piled up 28 total points last Saturday in competition against Purdue, giving Miami an 18-point lead before the swimmers began action Friday afternoon at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Whipp returned to his native state of Indiana and came away a winner, tying for first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.92. He also placed third in the 200 individual medley.
Melling nipped his Purdue competitor in the 200 breaststroke by six-one-hundredths of a second, touching the wall in a time of 2:11.77.
The RedHawks got runner-up finishes from Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) in the 100 freestyle and the 200 IM, Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights) in the 500 free, and Hoosier-state product Mike Kline (Fort Wayne, IN) in the 200 backstroke.
Other RedHawk point producers included ANDY KILKENNY (Manchester, MO), Patrick Greitzer (Springfield), Sean Minderlein (Mullica Hill, NJ), MIKE CAVANAUGH (Bowling Green), Sam Crockett (Louisville, KY), Joe Baumgartner (St. Louis, MO), Sean Sullivan (Huntington, NY), Ryan Neff (Chesterland), Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO), Logan Emery (Chesterfield, MO) and Sam Reeder (Worthington).
Miami's next meet is Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. when it hosts the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
