Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
Senior defenseman Cameron Schilling scored first for Miami Thursday, just 5:13 into the contest. In seven games now this year, the RedHawks have scored first five times, doing so within the first 10 minutes each time.
Senior defenseman Cameron Schilling notched a goal and an assist Thursday, giving him his ninth career multi-point game and first of the season.
Sophomore forward Bryon Paulazzo tallied his first goal of the season in the second period and just the fifth of his career.
Senior forward Alden Hirschfeld recorded an assist Thursday, giving him a team-best five helpers. He has one assist in five of seven games this year.
Miami's power play went 0-for-5 Thursday night. The RedHawks are now just 5-for-33 on the man advantage this season and 0 for their last 19 power play opportunities, including 0-for-18 in their last four games.
Miami held Lake Superior to only 21 shots on goal in regulation, which would have tied a season low for an opponent, as Bemidji State fired 21 shots Oct. 8. LSSU finished with 23 shots however, including overtime.
The RedHawks played their second overtime game of the season Thursday. Miami is now 0-2 in overtime games this year, also falling to Colgate on Oct. 15, 3-2, in the extra session. The RedHawks tied all six overtime games last year.
With Thursday's loss, Miami has dropped four straight games, its first four-game losing streak since a five-game losing streak from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16, 2009, the year Miami went on to play in the National Championship.
The loss to the Lakers was Miami's first loss to Lake Superior since March 10, 2007 in the CCHA Playoffs. The RedHawks were 9-0-1 vs. LSSU prior to Thursday since the 2007-08 season.
Miami now has five losses in its first seven games for the first time since the 2000-01 season when the RedHawks started 1-5-1. That year was also the last time the `Hawks started CCHA play 0-3. Miami still finished with a winning record and tied for second in the CCHA.
By holding LSSU to three goals, Miami has limited its opponents to three goals or less five times this year but are just 2-3 in those games. Miami held foes to three goals or less 32 times last year, going 23-4-5.
