MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Miami University field hockey team scored two early goals, but was unable to hang on as Central Michigan captured a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 5-11 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas improve to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the MAC.
Miami did not wait long to get on the board, scoring in the fifth minute of the game. Olivia Miller sent a cross pass from the left side of the circle over to the right side. Jackie Nguyen was there to chip the ball over the goalkeeper. Less than four minutes later, Emily Gruesser found herself open in the middle of the circle. Her shot found the back of the net and made it 2-0. The RedHawks would hold the Chippewas to only four shots during the first half and take the two goal lead into the break.
Central Michigan's Cayleigh Immelmann would tie the game with two goals early in the second half. She scored the first one on a cross from the baseline in the 41st minute, and recorded the equalizer on a penalty stroke in the 49th minute.
The score remained tied for the next 17 minutes. Miami had two shot attempts during that time, one by Miller and one by Nguyen, but both were kicked away. In the 66th minute, Erin Dye would tap in a cross pass from Simone Lazar to give the Chippewas the lead. The RedHawks would be unable to get another shot off as CMU held on for the victory.
Miami outshot the Chippewas, 9-8, for the game. CMU had the penalty corner advantage at 6-2. Nguyen led the RedHawks with four shots, while Mueller made two saves in net.
The RedHawks will host their final three home matches of the season next week. On Tuesday, Miami steps out of conference to welcome No. 17 Ohio State to Oxford for a 3 p.m. game. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the RedHawks take on MAC-leading Ohio at 1 p.m. Finally, on Sunday, Oct. 23, Miami hosts Kent State at 1 p.m. for senior day.
