OXFORD, Ohio--The Miami University men's swimming and diving squad (3-4-1 dual meets) travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face the defending M-d-American Conference Champion Eagles of Eastern Michigan University (2-3 dual meets) this Saturday, January 29. Action begins at 1 p.m. at the Jones Natatorium, where Coach Pete Lindsay will try to lead his team to its third straight victory.
The RedHawks are coming off of a very convincing win against the Cincinnati Bearcats, a victory that was headed by the effort of junior Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC). Gunnels scored 18 individual points vs. UC, placing first in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, and he also was a part of Jason Hass (Jackson, MI), who scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. As of this weekend's meet, there are four top times in the MAC that are held by RedHawks: sophomore Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) in the 500 freestyle (4:36.17), junior JIM BERES (Columbus) in both the one- and three-meter diving (388.30 and 423.45), and the 800 freestyle relay team of Gunnels, Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN), Ian Joyce (Hampden, MA) and Melling (6:48.27).
The Eagles are led by sophomore Jacob Hanson, who currently holds the fastest times in several events among MAC swimmers, including: 400 individual medley, 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, and the 100 backstroke. Other Eastern Michigan swimmers currently holding top MAC times are senior Justin Griggs (100 freestyle), junior Troy Esentan (100 and 200 breaststroke), junior Matt Zavislak (100 butterfly), and senior Owen Gray (200 butterfly). As a team, EMU owns the top conference time in the 400 freestyle relay. The Eagles are coming off of a victory of their own, having defeated the University of Buffalo on January 22 by a score of 164-136.
If recent history is any indication, the RedHawks have a very tough matchup ahead of them. In their last five meetings, Eastern Michigan has won all five.
This is Miami's second-to-last dual meet of the season. On February 5, the RedHawks return home to face Ball State at 3 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center inside MU's Recreation Center. Just ahead is Miami's participation in the MAC Championships, held Mar. 4-6 at Southern Illinois University.
