OXFORD,Ohio--The Miami University RedHawks' third dual meet of the 2011 portion of the women's swimming and diving season will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon (Jan. 22) against the Ball State Cardinals. The dual will be held at Ball State's Lewellen Aquatic Center.
Head Coach Dave Jennings' RedHawks enter this week with a 7-1 dual meet record and a No. 1 ranking in the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Division 1 Poll. They are coming off two wins this past week against Cincinnati (175.5-124.5) and Evansville (193.5-104.5).
"Judging by where we stood a year ago, we are way ahead of where we were," said Jennings. "We just got back from Florida where our main focus of the trip was training and the girls did a good job down there."
Double victories by seniors Miranda Kaltenborn (Memphis, TN) and Megan Brunn (Mansfield) helped lead the RedHawks against Cincinnati on Friday. Kaltenborn took first in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. Brunn won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and placed second in another event giving her a team-best 22 individual points.
"[Kaltenborn and Brunn] are seniors with experience in racing and knowing what they need to do," said Jennings. "They are hard workers and consistent practice in and practice out."
All-American Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati) added to the victory with her win in the 400 individual medley. Vehr also helped with the first place finish in the 200 medley relay with teammates Leah Thornton (Helena, AL), Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) and Maddie Kete (Bay Village).
Ball State is entering this week with a 4-1 dual meet record and a win over Illinois State Friday evening. Senior ALANNA BADER (Monroe, WI) and freshman BRIDGETTE RUEHL (Lowell, IN) both had individual victories against Illinois State. Bader swept the butterfly events and Ruehl topped both breaststroke races.
"I expect that Ball State will be ready for us. They are the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference. It will be a great battle on Saturday," said Jennings. "We will be tested a lot these next three weeks with Ball State, Toledo and Ohio. It's going to be a lot of fun."
