CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior Chris Gunnels has been named MAC Men's Swimmer of the Week by the league office for the week of Jan. 10-16.
Gunnels was a part of five first-place finishes, leading the RedHawks to wins over Evansville and Cincinnati. He won all three individual events he entered during the week. Against Evansville on Wednesday, he won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.84. On Friday against Cincinnati he won the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.20, 1.78 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, and the 100 freestyle in 46.60. Gunnels also anchored the 400 freestyle relay in a second-place finish against Evansville and was a member of two first-place relay teams against Cincinnati. Miami's 200 medley relay team won in a time of 1:35.17 with Gunnels leading off and the 200 freestyle relay team took first with a time of 1:24.64, Miami's fastest time of the season in that event.
Gunnels and the rest of Head Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks are off this weekend before putting their two-meet winning streak on the line at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 29 at 1 p.m.
