Miami held Akron scoreless for the first 4:50 of the game as Miami jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Zips started 0-for-7 from the field until a 3-pointer from Brett McClanahan. Akron then answered with a 10-0 run of their own.
Junior forward Julian Mavunga finished with career-high 25 points, marking his third 20-point game this season, as he went 12-for-15 from the free throw line, marking a season high in makes and attempts for a RedHawk this year. His previous career high was 24 points against Xavier Dec. 1 of this season. He also handed out four assists, giving him 11 in his last two games after dishing out seven at Bowling Green Jan. 16.
Sophomore guard Orlando Williams totaled 12 points in the first half, including 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc and 4-for-8 overall. He would go scoreless in the second half, however.
Miami went into the break leading 39-28, with the 11-point margin marking the RedHawks' largest halftime lead this season. Miami's previous best effort was a nine-point lead at halftime against Xavier Dec. 1
Miami finished with just three turnovers in the first half, a single-half season low, and ended the game with just 10 turnovers, the RedHawks' second fewest this season. Their season low this year is nine against Troy on Dec. 11. Prior to tonight, Miami had committed 20 turnovers in each of its three Mid-American Conference games this year.
Senior forwards Nick Winbush and Antonio Ballard both recorded double-doubles in Wednesday's win as Winbush scored 11 points and pulled down a game- and season-high 12 boards (one shy of his career high) while Ballard ended with 19 points and 10 caroms. With two double-doubles in the game, it marked the first time since Feb. 4, 2006 at Buffalo that two RedHawks recorded double-doubles in the same game. On that day, William Hatcher (14 points, 11 assists) and Nathan Peavy (22 points, 12 rebounds) each notched double-doubles. It was Winbush's second double-double this season and fourth of his career while Ballard recorded his third of the year and fifth of his career.
Miami finished with four players in double digits in scoring for the sixth time in the last 12 games, including two straight and three of four MAC games. Winbush had 11, Williams had 12, Ballard had 19 and Mavunga totaled 25 to achieve the feat.
Sophomore center Vince Legarza recorded his first career block late in the second half.
Sophomore guard Allen Roberts pulled down a career-high-tying four rebounds.
Miami outrebounded Akron 42-31 for the game with the +11 margin its second best this year. After being outrebounded in all but three of Miami's non-conference games this year, the `Hawks haven't been outrebounded in MAC play this year. Miami outrebounded Ohio by 18 and Buffalo by two and was even on the glass against Bowling Green. The `Hawks snared 15 offensive boards Wednesday with six coming from Ballard.
Miami scored its most points in regulation this season, totaling 84 points. The `Hawks scored 92 against Ohio Jan. 9, but it came in triple overtime. Miami's previous high in regulation was 80 points against Troy Dec. 11.
Miami went 23-for-28 from the charity stripe Wednesday for 82.1 percent while the `Hawks went 21-for-26 in the second half after knocking down its only pair of free throws in the first half. Mavunga hit 12 of them on 15 tries while Ballard was 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Miami's most free throws this year came in triple overtime against Ohio when Miami was 25-for-33.
