Last week was a busy one, which included a bowl triumph for football and culminated with a thrilling triple-overtime win to open Mid-American Conference action for men's basketball. As we welcome a new semester this week with the start of classes, we also officially welcome back Miami alumnus Don Treadwell '82 as our new head football coach.

Behind a 35-21 victory over Middle Tennessee State Thursday night in the GoDaddy.com Bowl, Miami became the first team in FBS history to go from double-digits losses (1-11 in 2009) to double-digit wins (10-4 in 2010). The RedHawks also finished with an eight-game turnaround, the second-best effort in FBS history. An inspired pre-game speech by interim head coach Lance Guidry has received over 75,000 views on YouTube and been on numerous national sports shows. (VIEW VIDEO) Miami swept the bowl MVP awards with redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Boucher earning Overall MVP honors, senior running back Thomas Merriweather being named the Offensive MVP, freshman defensive back Dayonne Nunley capturing Defensive MVP honors and junior punt returner DeMarco Paine seizing the Special Teams MVP award. After playing the nation's toughest non-conference schedule, which included four of the top six teams in the country, the men's basketball team (6-9; 1-0 MAC) opened MAC play in dramatic fashion on Sunday, defeating long-time rival Ohio 92-88 in triple overtime. Sophomore guard Orlando Williams sunk a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the third overtime to put Miami up for good. (RECAP) Senior forward Antonio Ballard had a career-high 26 points and a game-best 12 rebounds to lead the RedHawks against the Bobcats and was tabbed MAC East Division Co-Player of the Week for his efforts. (RELEASE) After a three-game road stretch, Miami returns home to host Buffalo at 7 p.m. Thursday before hitting the road for a 2 p.m. game at Bowling Green on Sunday.
The junior synchronized skating team finished fifth among a 10-team field at the Foot of the Lake Classic/Junior World Qualifier with a combined score of 125.77. The RedHawks, who had the fifth-best score for their short program on Friday, had the sixth-best free skate score but held on to fifth place for the event. (RECAP) This weekend, Jan. 15-16, the senior and collegiate synchronized skating teams are in action at the Mid-America Championships in Fraser, Mich. The junior team takes the ice at the Prague Cup Jan. 28-30 in Prague, Czech Republic.
After helping Miami to a runner-up finish at the Florida College Classic two weeks ago, junior defenseman Cameron Schilling was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week last week. (RELEASE) The No. 7/8 Miami hockey team (11-8-3, 8-6-2-1 CCHA) led 2-0 heading into the third period but Ohio State scored five unanswered goals, including a pair of empty-netters late, to upset the RedHawks and hand them a 5-2 defeat Saturday night at Value City Arena, completing a weekend sweep. (RECAP) On Friday, despite outshooting Ohio State 40-24, the RedHawks were unable to find the back of the net while the Buckeyes capitalized on a power play in the closing seconds of the second period to earn a 1-0 victory. (RECAP) The RedHawks continue CCHA action this weekend, returning home for the first time in over a month by hosting Bowling Green Jan. 14-15. Puck drop Friday is set for 7:35 p.m. while Saturday's game is at 7:05 p.m.

Congratulations to Courtney Osborn who was named MAC East Division Player of the Week last week after averaging 20.5 ppg in games against Chicago State and Cincinnati. (RELEASE) The women's basketball team (8-7; 0-2 MAC) held a slim halftime lead at Kent State, but KSU used an 18-7 run over the final 5:30 to break open a tight game and knock off Miami, 76-62, in the MAC opener for both teams last Wednesday. (RECAP) On Saturday, Bowling Green took a quick 14-2 lead, and despite a few strong RedHawk scoring runs, Miami was unable to chip into the lead as BGSU won, 90-52. (RECAP) The RedHawks return home on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. when they host Buffalo. That is the third annual "Class at the Court" game and nearly 1,500 elementary students from the Talawanda School District will be in attendance.
Women's swimming and diving picked up a 134-71 win over Davidson during its winter training trip in Boca Raton, Fla. The RedHawk women's and men's teams are back in action this week both hosting a home meet against Evansville at 5 p.m. Wednesday before each travels to Cincinnati for a 5 p.m. meet on Saturday.
Women's indoor track and field is also in action this weekend, competing at the BGSU Women's Team Challenge on Saturday.

Three MAC All-Academic Teams were announced last week. From volleyball, senior middle hitter Michele Metzler earned the honor. (RELEASE) From men's cross country, redshirt sophomore David Eichenberger captured the honor for a second straight year. (RELEASE) Two RedHawk seniors from the women's cross country team earned the honor Amanda Mirochna and Rachel Patterson each were voted to the team. It was Patterson's second time on the MAC All-Academic Team for cross country and Mirochna's third such award. (RELEASE)
