Miami Falls to 16th Ranked Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Miami volleyball team fought valiantly but dropped a 0-3 decision (22-25, 27-29, 17-25) to 16th-ranked Kentucky Friday night in the opening match of the Kentucky Classic. The RedHawks fall to 1-3 on the year, while the Wildcats improve to 2-2.
A kill from Colleen Loftus and a Kentucky attack error gave Miami a 2-0 lead early in set two. Michele Metzler recorded two kills as the teams traded points until the score was tied at nine. The Wildcats followed with a 7-2 run that gave them their largest advantage of the set at 16-11. Kills by Loftus and Cassie Farrell set up by Amy Kendall assists keyed a 6-1 run that tied the score at 17. Three points later with the score 19-18 in favor of Kentucky, the Wildcats were able to close out the set by taking six of the final 10 points.
Amy Raseman was the story of set two as she recorded seven kills in the frame. Three early kills from her staked the RedHawks to a 6-4 lead. Kentucky took control during the middle portion of the set, going on a 13-7 run take a 17-13 advantage. A double block by Farrell and Raseman, another kill by Raseman and a service ace by Lisa Treadway helped tie the score at 18. Trailing 22-23, Raseman put down yet another kill off of a Kendall assist and Loftus followed with a service ace to give Miami set point at 24-23. The RedHawks would have three set points, but each time the Wildcats were able to fight them off. Kentucky was able to get a set point of its own at 27-26, but a kill from Cassie Farrell kept Miami in the match. The Wildcats would then follow by taking the next two points to finally secure the 29-27 win.
With the score tied at three in the third set, Kentucky went on a 9-2 run to take a 12-5 advantage. Two kills by Loftus, along with two double blocks by Kendall and Kayleigh Cox helped close the RedHawks to within three at 12-15. That would be as close as Miami could get as Kentucky closed the set on a 10-5 run to win 25-17.
Raseman led Miami with 10 kills, while Loftus had seven. Defense continued to be a team effort as seven different players had at least four digs. Loftus was the team leader there with eight. Kendall led the RedHawks with 30 assists.
Miami concludes play at the Kentucky Classic with two games Saturday. The RedHawks will face Ohio State at 1 p.m. and then take on USF at 5:30 p.m.
