AKRON, Ohio - A tough offensive night and a strong Akron attack led to an 0-3 (19-25, 16-25, 12-25) defeat for the volleyball team Saturday night. The RedHawks are now 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips improve to 10-4 and 2-0 in the MAC.
Falling behind 3-10 in the first set, kills from Madison Dodd, Amy Raseman and Amy Kendall helped spark a 6-2 run that pulled Miami to within three at 9-12. The Zips eventually pushed the lead back to eight at 18-10, but a Michele Metzler block led the RedHawks on another run, this time 8-5, that closed it to 18-23. That would be as close as Miami would get, as the Zips took two of the next three points to earn a 25-19 victory.
Metzler, Kendall, Raseman and Cassie Farrell each had kills as a competitive beginning to set two saw Akron in front 10-9 after 19 points. The Zips followed with a 13-3 run to break the set open at 23-12. Two kills from Farrell helped bring Miami closer, but the deficit was too much to overcome and Akron took set two, 25-16.
Akron jumped to a 7-1 lead in set three. Raseman and Metzler tried to help keep the RedHawks in it with two kills apiece, but Akron hit .471 for the set and won the match with a 25-12 victory.
Raseman led Miami with nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Metzler contributed seven kills, while Kendall led the way with 26 assists.
Miami continues MAC play on the road Thursday when it travels to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. match. The RedHawks will next play at Millett Hall when they host Northern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2:30 p.m.
