There were many RedHawk successes on the fields and courts last week, and we gear up for a busy week that boasts nine events in four sports being contested in Oxford this week.

Football (1-1; 1-0 MAC) posted a 28-21 win in the RedHawks' Mid-American Conference and home opener on Saturday. Senior tailback Thomas Merriweather rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the winning effort, while sophomore safety Pat Hinkel, senior safety Jordan Gafford and freshman cornerback Dayonne Nunley each came up with interceptions for the RedHawks. (RECAP) Miami rounds out a two-game home stretch against Colorado State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ONN. Miami hosts four more home games this season, and it's not too late to get in on the action. Sophomore Jarrod Eick was named Mid-American Conference Men's Runner of the Week last week, leading Miami to the team title at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge with a third-place finish in a personal-best time. (RELEASE) Hosting a home meet for the first time since 2006, the Miami University men's cross country put on a strong show for its home fans as five RedHawks finished in the top six to win the Miami Invitational Saturday morning at Miami's Western Campus. Eick led the way for the second straight meet, as he claimed his first collegiate individual title, winning the race in an 8K personal-best time of 25:38. Senior Michael Perry crossed the finish line a second later in second place. (RECAP) Miami returns to action Friday, Sept. 17 at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
Senior Rachel Patterson was named Mid-American Conference Women's Runner of the Week last week after leading Miami to the team title at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge with a first-place individual finish. (RELEASE) Despite resting its top seven runners, the women's cross country team still ran to a second-place finish last Saturday at its own Miami Invitational held on Miami's Western Campus. The 5K race was the first RedHawk home meet since 2006. Running through heavy rains, the RedHawk harriers totaled 60 points, led by junior Tory Paez, who was the top Miami finisher in 13th place in 19:18. (RECAP) Miami's full squad returns to action Friday, Sept. 17 at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
The women's soccer team (5-2-0) opened play at the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel in convincing fashion last Friday, striking early and receiving strong goalkeeping to down Winthrop, 2-0. (RECAP) Miami won the tournament with a solid 2-1 win against Temple on Sunday. (RECAP) Jess Kodiak registered a goal in each game and an assist against Winthrop. Kodiak was named tournament MVP, while freshmen Katy Dolesh and Kayla Zakrzewski also were named to the All-Tournament Team. Kodiak has registered at least one point in all seven games this season and now tied leads the team with five goals and also has a team-high six assists. The RedHawks return home to host the first two of six straight contests at Miami Soccer Field when they entertain Eastern Illinois on Friday at 4 p.m. and Evansville on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.

Volleyball (4-6) captured its home opener last Wednesday with a thrilling five-set win over Wright State. Redshirt freshman Jackie Lang tallied a career-high five service aces, while Amy Kendall had career highs of 49 assists and four service aces in the winning effort. (RECAP) Miami headed to Michigan for a tournament Friday and Saturday. The RedHawks picked up three-set wins over Chicago State (RECAP) and Youngstown State (RECAP) before falling in three sets to host No. 22 Michigan. Congratulations to Amy Raseman and Lisa Treadway, who were both named to the all-tournament team. (RECAP) Miami returns home for the annual Miami/Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational this weekend. The RedHawks welcome DePaul, Illinois State and Indiana to this year's event. Miami will face DePaul on Friday at 7 p.m., Illinois State on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Indiana to conclude the tournament at 7:30 p.m.
The golf team got its season off to a strong start Saturday with a second-place showing in the Purdue/Midwest Shootout. The RedHawks shot a 36-hole team score of 27-over par in the event. Playing on its home course, Purdue won the event at 12-over par. Senior Nathan Sutherland was the top Miami individual, shooting rounds of 74 and 72 to finish at two-over par and in a tie for third place. (RECAP) Miami travels to compete in the Marshall Invitational Sept. 13-14.
Congratulations to junior back Kylie Landaros, who was tabbed the MAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week last week. (RELEASE) Miami just missed out in the Top 20 poll last week as the top vote getter in the others receiving votes category. After a 12-day break, Miami (5-0) returns to action when the RedHawks host Indiana in their home opener at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17. The RedHawks play at Northwestern on Sunday.
Miami Athletics announced the inductees into the 42nd Hall of Fame Class. Four All-Americans, an NCAA record holder and former Major League Baseball player, and a former National Football League player comprise this year's Hall of Fame Class. To be inducted during halftime of the Saturday, Oct. 23 football game vs. Ohio University are Danielle Berkemeier '03 (women's soccer), Andrea Cunningham '03 (women's soccer), Walt Podgurski '69 (wrestling), Buddy Schultz '73 (baseball), Becca Williams '97 (women's track & field) and Mack Yoho '58 (football). (RELEASE) A Hall of Fame brunch will be held at the Shriver Center Heritage Room on Miami University's campus at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Space is limited for the brunch and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. NO walk-up tickets will be available. Reservations will be taken until 5 p.m. Oct. 18. Cost of the brunch is $18 per person and reservations can be made by contacting the Miami Athletics Ticket Office at 1-866-MUHAWKS or 513-529-HAWK.
Two promotions within the athletic department also were announced last week. In a restructuring of Miami University's athletic department, athletic director Brad Bates has promoted Josh Fenton and Keanah Smith to associate directors of athletics. (RELEASE)
