Michigan Able to Defeat Miami After Battle

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Despite battling hard in each set, the RedHawk volleyball team fell, 0-3 (16-25, 19-25, 20-25), to 22nd-ranked Michigan to finish the Michigan/adidas Invitational in second place. The RedHawks are now 4-6 on the year, while the Wolverines improve to 8-1.
At the conclusion of tournament, Amy Raseman and Lisa Treadway were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Miami found itself down, 3-10 in set one. The RedHawks closed to within four at 8-12 thanks to a 5-2 run that saw kills from Amy Raseman and Cassie Farrell, along with a service ace from Michelle Metzler. The Wolverines followed with a 7-3 run of their own to take a 19-11 advantage. Miami was not done as two kills from Raseman, along with a kill from Madison Dodd helped the RedHawks pull within five at 16-21. Michigan would then take the next four points to win the set, 25-16.
Set two was a competitive affair that saw Miami overcome an early 1-4 deficit to tie the match at six. That early run was jumpstarted by kills from Raseman and Dodd off Amy Kendall assists. A 14-7 run by Michigan gave the Wolverines control at 20-13, but once again the RedHawks would mount a comeback. Jenn Caylor and Metzler put down two kills apiece, while Metzler and Raseman teamed up on a double block as Miami closed to within four at 19-23. Finishing the comeback was not to be however, as Michigan took the next two points to earn a 25-19 victory.
Kills from Metzler and Madison Hardy, along with a Wolverine attack error put Miami in front, 3-2, to start set three. The teams battled back and forth, trading the lead four times until the score was tied at 11. Three straight points from Michigan gave the Wolverines the advantage back at 14-11, but kills from Metzler and Christina Menche, and a block from Kendell and Farrell were part of a 5-2 RedHawk run that saw Miami pull within one at 15-16. Michigan would answer with a 7-2 run of its own to go in front, 23-17. A double block by Menche and Farrell would stop the bleeding, but the two teams would go on to split the next four points and Michigan came away with the 25-20 win.
Farrell and Raseman led Miami with seven kills apiece. Treadway was the top defensive player with 10 kills. Kendall finished with 27 assists. The RedHawks hit .237 for the match, compared to Michigan at .398.
Miami returns home for the annual Miami/Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational next weekend. The RedHawks welcome DePaul, Illinois State and Indiana to this year's event. Miami will face DePaul on Friday at 7 p.m., Illinois State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and Indiana to conclude the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Check with MURedHawks.com later this week for the tournament homepage.
