CLEVELAND - Miami University rising senior Jon Edgington was named to the 2010 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Baseball Team, the league office announced Tuesday. The honor is Edgington's first on the league's All-Academic Team and marks the fourth straight year a RedHawk has earned the distinction.
Edgington (Cincinnati, Ohio), who served as a co-captain in 2010 despite being just a junior, holds a 3.71 cumulative grade-point average. The microbiology major earned a 3.97 GPA during the 2010 spring semester, landing him on the Dean's List, and was also named MAC male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of May 3-9.
Edgington played in 47 games in 2010, starting 46 all at second base, while batting a career-best .307, including .324 in MAC play only, where he started all 27 games. He finished a perfect 15-for-15 on stolen bases, including nine in league play, which was fifth in the conference. The Wyoming High School product drove in 30 runs and scored 51 runs, which was second on the team, 33 of which came in MAC play, which tied for fifth in the league.
Edgington finished the season with 13 doubles, a triple and three round-trippers (all against MAC foes) while slugging .441 and recording a .392 on-base percentage. The second baseman had a .978 fielding percentage and notched 20 multi-hit games, including a career-high-tying four hits May 20 vs. Ohio, and nine multi-RBI games.
To be nominated for Academic All-MAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the games for that season. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. The nominees are then voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
