OXFORD, Ohio - Strong pitching and some timely hitting led the RedHawks to a doubleheader sweep of Ohio on Friday afternoon. Miami took the first game 4-0 and followed with a 7-2 win in the nightcap. The RedHawks improve to 29-22 overall and 12-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats fall to 18-29 overall and 13-7 in the MAC.
Starting pitcher Jessica Simpson was the story of game one. She threw her eighth shutout of the year, allowing only three singles and no walks. No Ohio batter reached second base the entire game on Simpson. She improved her record to 17-14, and lowered her ERA to 1.54.
Miami scored all of its game one runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jenna McGivney started things off with a walk. Kathryn Russette followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt in which the Ohio third baseman attempted to throw out McGivney. The throw was not in time and everyone was safe. Daniela Torres was next and she singled down the left field line to score Ashley Zappia, who had come in to pinch run for McGivney. A double by Meghan Mawn brought home Russette and Torres and made it 3-0. The RedHawks completed their scoring when a single by Alicia Hogl scored Mawn.
Mawn finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI. Torres was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the first inning in game two with an unearned run off starter Meredith Linch. The RedHawks responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Torres led off with a double to left field. Two batters later, Mawn doubled to left center to bring her home. After a Sarah Billstrom single put two runners in scoring position, Hogl doubled to right field to make it 3-1 after one inning of play.
In the bottom of the second, a throwing error by Ohio pitcher Melissa Bonner allowed Zappia to come around and score. A solo home run by the Bobcats cut the lead to 4-2 after three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Jordan McElroy was hit by a pitch and Mawn singled to the shortstop. That was followed by a three-run blast over the left field wall by Billstrom, her eighth home run of the year, to make it 7-2 and complete the scoring for Miami.
In game two, Billstrom was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Hogl was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Linch pitched well in earning her 12th victory of the season. She finished with six innings pitched, giving up one earned run on four hits.
Miami continues its final home weekend with a single game against Akron on Saturday at 6 p.m. Due to the graduation ceremonies all cars must park in the West Millett parking lot.
