OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's offense erupted for 20 runs in two games to help make short work of Dayton during Thursday's doubleheader. Both games were ended early due to the run-rule advantage. The RedHawks took the first game 8-0 in six innings, and won the nightcap 12-0 in five innings. Miami is now 13-14 on the season, while the Flyers fall to 11-19-1.
The hitting started right away in the bottom of the first inning of game one. With two runners on base, Alicia Hogl doubled to left center to bring them home. One batter later, Kathryn Russette singled to second base which advanced Hogl to third. The second baseman threw the ball away and Hogl was able to score. Miami made it 4-0 in the bottom of the second when Jordan McElroy doubled to right field to score Jenna McGivney.
The score stayed that way for the next four innings, as starter Jessica Simpson shut down the Flyer attack. She finished with six innings pitched, giving up five hits while tying a season-high with 10 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sarah Billstrom led off with a triple to left field. One batter later, Shannon Tillett singled to bring her home. McGivney hit into a fielder's choice which put Tillett out. Kristen Sheffield singled to advance McGivney to second, while McElroy doubled down the right field line to score her. Daniela Torres followed with a fly ball to center that the centerfielder lost in the sun, which scored McElroy and Sheffield and gave the RedHawks the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Torres finished game one 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. McElroy was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Tillett was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Game two started as a pitchers' duel as each team manage no runs and only one hit through the first two innings. That changed when Miami's offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third. With McElroy and Torres on second and third, Meghan Mawn singled to centerfield to score both of them. Hogl joined her on base with a walk and Billstrom hit her sixth home run of the season to centerfield to make it 5-0. Russette followed with a double to left center. After a pitching change, McGivney walked, Tillett reached on a fielder's choice and Casey Drees walked. McElroy hit into a fielder's choice, which brought McGivney home. Torres completed the scoring with a single up the middle to score Tillett.
The scoring barrage continued with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hogl reached on a bunt single. Billstrom walked, while McGivney singled to right field to score Hogl. Briana Burke came up next and doubled to score McGivney and Billstrom. Drees singled through the right side to move Burke to third, while Katie Osburn scored her on a fielder's choice. Taylor Rice doubled to deep right center to move Osburn to third, while Sheffield singled through the left side to make it 12-0 and complete the scoring for Miami.
Meredith Linch pitched the first four innings of the game to earn the victory, while Osburn handled the fifth. Linch gave up only three hits while striking out three. No Dayton batter reached third base in either game of the doubleheader.
Billstrom finished the day 1-for-2 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Mawn was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Torres was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. McGivney was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
