OXFORD, Ohio -The Miami University men's swimming and diving team is one of seven teams set to compete in the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship meet to be hosted by Eastern Michigan University, Thursday through Saturday (March 4-6).
This year's meet welcomes three newcomers to the Conference: the University of Evansville, Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University. The three teams enter the MAC after being a part of the Sun Belt Conference and will be with the league until at least 2015. Ball State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Miami round out the field.
"All of the coaches here this past weekend [for the women's championship meet] expressed their excitement about a seven-team men's MAC meet," said head coach Pete Lindsay. "It looks to be a strong meet with the potential of three or four very strong matchups. Eastern Michigan has a fast pool which is a favorite of our swimmers from Michigan. We are looking forward to a fast meet."
Miami's men head to the MAC meet on the heels of a win over Ball State University on February 6th, with a season record of 4-6-1.
Top scores are held by many of Miami's top swimmers and divers.
Senior DAVE BROWN (Lake Orion, MI) enters the meet with the top time in the MAC in the 100 freestyle (45.53), and the third-fastest time in the 50 free (20.91). He placed seventh in the 50 free at last year's MAC meet. Brown was second-team All-MAC a year ago.
Senior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo), MAC Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 19, has the ninth-best times in the 100 breaststroke (58.38) and the 200 breast (2:08.48). He was second-team All-MAC in 2009.
Other top times for the RedHawks include sophomore Chris Gunnels (So., Chapel Hill, NC), who recorded the third-fastest time in the 200 freestyle (1:41.58), and the fourth-fastest time in the 200 backstroke (1:50.31). At last year's MAC meet, he placed eighth in the 200 free event, earning second-team All-MAC honors. Gunnels was the MAC Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 27.
Junior Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) has the season's third-best time in the 200 butterfly (1:52.76) and is expected to be a points contributor for the RedHawks.
Sophomore diver Cameron Horner (Columbus) heads to the MAC meet with the top score in three meter event (384.75), while teammates JIM BERES (So., Columbus) and MICHAEL GRAINGER (Fr., Cincinnati) hold the third- and fourth-best scores with point totals 378.15 and 340.65, respectively. Horner finished third in the one-meter event and seventh in the three meter at last year's championship and earned first-team All-MAC recognition. Beres placed third in the three meter and sixth in the one-meter competition, earning second-team All-MAC honors.
At the 2009 MAC meet, the RedHawk men finished third, getting contributions from Darin Smith (Bossier City, LA) coming in as Miami's top individual points scorer, contributing 17 points with his third-place finishes in the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle finals. Smith was a second-team All-MAC choice.
Brendan Melling (Solon) placed fourth among MAC swimmers in the 1650 (15:54.55). Freshman Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO), the MAC Swimmer of the Week on Feb. 9, has the eighth-best time this year in the 500 freestyle.
