JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Miami University baseball team scored in just two innings of a doubleheader at Jacksonville State, but totaled 15 runs and managed a split with the Gamecocks, earning a 7-6 comeback win in game two after falling 14-8 in game one Saturday at Rudy Abbott Field. The two sides had met just once previously - a Miami victory a year ago - as the RedHawks (8-8) now hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with JSU (8-10).
In the first game of the twin bill, Miami fell behind 14-0 through six innings before tallying eight runs in the eighth, but in the night cap the 'Hawks trailed 6-0 after five frames and scored seven runs in the sixth before shutting down the Gamecocks the rest of the way to seal the 7-6 win and secure a split on the day.
Junior second baseman Brad Gschwind (Cincinnati, Ohio), senior catcher Adam Weisenburger (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior shortstop Ryan Kaup (Chandler, Ariz.) each notched a pair of hits, collected two RBI and scored a run to lead the RedHawks' offense in game two, as Miami held a slim 13-11 edge in hits over Jax State.
Sophomore reliever Matt Rosinski (University Heights, Ohio) improved to 2-0 on the year, earning the win in the second contest, as he threw two scoreless stanzas with a trio of punch-outs. Fellow sophomore Jordan Jankowski (McMurray, Pa.) picked up his third save of the season, firing the final two frames without allowing a run while ringing up five Gamecocks. JSU's Alex Jones (0-2) took the loss, allowing only the winning run, while working 3.2 innings.
Scoring in game two began with an RBI single in the bottom of the second by second baseman Blake Seguin that put Jax State up 1-0 while an RBI double by right fielder Kyle Bluestein bumped the Gamecock advantage to 2-0 in the third inning. Miami looked to take the lead in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the RedHawk threat.
Bluestein then tacked on a two-run blast as part of a four-run fifth inning for Jacksonville State, giving them a 6-0 lead. Then Miami went to work, registering all seven of its runs in the top of the sixth, as Kaup, Gschwind and Weisenburger each smacked two-RBI singles, with Weisenburger's serving as the go-ahead RBI. The RedHawk bullpen shut down JSU the rest of the game, with Jankowski striking out three Gamecocks in the ninth, the final coming with the tying run on second base, to lock up the 7-6 win.
In the first game of the twin bill, Miami struggled out of the gates, surrendering five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam by catcher Andrew Edge, and gave up four more in the third, to fall behind 9-0. A three-run homer by third baseman Sam Eberle in the fifth frame followed by another pair of Gamecock runs in the sixth built JSU an insurmountable 14-0 lead.
The RedHawks would not go quietly though, sending eight runs across the plate in the top of the eighth, as senior left fielder Zak Hatfield (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led off with his first round-tripper of the year while an RBI triple to right center by junior right fielder Adam Eaton (Springfield, Ohio), an RBI single by freshman Kevin Bower (Indianapolis, Ind.) and a three-run bomb by sophomore pinch hitter Pat Glass (Upper St. Claire, Pa.) capped the outburst.
Miami went down in order in the ninth however, ending any hopes of a comeback, as the RedHawks fell 14-8 in the day's opener.
Jacksonville State out-hit Miami 17-6 in the game, as left fielder Todd Cunningham went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI and runs each while Eberle and Edge each totaled four RBI. Glass had a career-high three RBI for the RedHawks, all coming on his first collegiate home run.
JSU's Hunter Rivers (3-1) earned the win on the mound, going seven innings and allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts, while junior Tyler Melling (Bellefontaine, Ohio) struggled in his fifth start of 2010, as he allowed 12 runs in just 4.2 innings of work while suffering the loss (1-2).
The RedHawks and Gamecocks play the deciding game of their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (noon CT).
