OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk softball team opened its home invitational Friday with a 6-1 victory over Robert Morris. Miami improves to 9-12 with the victory, while the Colonials fall to 4-7.
The RedHawks struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kathryn Russette led off the frame through the left side. Sarah Billstrom followed with a triple that scored Russette. The centerfielder threw the ball into the dugout on the play so Billstrom was awarded home as well.
It became 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Meghan Mawn singled home Daniela Torres.
With two out in the bottom of the fourth, Casey Drees on first base and Jenna McGivney on second base, Jordan McElroy singled to load up the bases. The Colonials changed pitchers, and after a tough battle Torres smoked a deep shot to center field that cleared the bases and made it 6-0.
Meanwhile Jessica Simpson pitched very well, allowing only one hit through the first six innings. The only trouble she found was in the top of the seventh inning when she allowed two hits and walked a batter. The Colonials then managed to score their only run on a passed ball.
Simpson finished the day having allowed three hits and no earned runs. She struck out three. Torres finished the day 1-for-2 with one walk, three RBI and one run scored.
The RedHawks play in two games at the Miami Invitational on Saturday. Miami will take on Canisius at noon, and follow that up with a 2 pm game against Michigan State.
