OXFORD, Ohio - Wednesday, March 17th, is a big day for Miami University junior Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati). Not only will she be traveling with RedHawk swimming coach Dave Jennings to begin final preparations for the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship, she'll be doing so on her 21st birthday.
And although it's not officially on Kelsey's birthday wish list, one thing she'd gladly accept as a belated gift is a sub-minute performance in Friday's 100-yard breaststroke competition. If that happens, the result would be All-America honors for the personable young lady from the Queen City.
Her lifetime best of 1:00.62 in the 100-yard event ranks 16th best nationally and is the Mid-American Conference and Miami varsity record. It's just :01.61 behind the nation's 100 breaststroke leader, Ashley Danner of George Mason University (59.06).
In the 200 breaststroke event, Vehr ranks 24th in the nation with a time of 2:11.70. Elizabeth Smith of Stanford University is the leader going into the NCAA meet at 2:07.65.
"We're pretty excited about Kelsey's chances at NCAAs,"said Jennings. "The experience she gained last year helps her know what this meet is all about. Kelsey's comfort level is much better than a year ago. Our goal is to get a little faster and see where that plays out."
The 2010 NCAA Division 1A Women's Swimming and Diving Championships are being hosted by Purdue University at the Doris Holloway Pool in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
First-through-eighth-place finishes would earn Vehr All-America honors, while ninth-through-16th result in honorable mention All-America kudos. Only three previous Miami swimmers--CAMILLA JOHANSSON (14th, 200 backstroke, 1994), CAROLINE KELLEY (11th, 10-meter diving, 1996) and TISH BUCHER (10th, 200 IM, 1982, AIAW Meet)--have earned honorable mention status.
The schedule:
Friday, March 19 - 11 a.m. - Preliminaries; 7 p.m. - Finals
Event No. 11 -- 100-YARD BREASTSTROKE
Saturday, March 20 - 11 a.m. - Preliminaries; 7 p.m. - Finals
Event No. 18 -- 200-YARD BREASTSTROKE
