While four Miami teams compete at Bowling Green this weekend, last week was bittersweet for Miami Athletics, as the RedHawks tasted lots of success in competition, welcomed many new faces as part of National Signing Day, but lost one of their own in hockey student assistant coach Brendan Burke.

Burke, a four-year student manager with the ice hockey team, was tragically killed in a car accident Friday afternoon. The top-ranked RedHawks (20-4-6, 17-1-4-2 CCHA) honored Burke by sweeping Lake Superior State at Steve Cady Arena over the weekend while Miami had a moment of silence for Burke prior to Saturday's contest, the team wore helmet stickers with the initials BB and staff wore black ribbons. The Lakers were no match for Miami Saturday, as the 'Hawks scored the game's first seven goals, including two from junior Andy Miele, and cruised to a 10-4 crushing of Lake Superior, as Miami scored its most goals in over two years. (RECAP) Friday night, sophomore goalie Cody Reichard broke the school record with his fifth shutout of the year, as the RedHawks won 2-0 over the Lakers. (RECAP) Former RedHawk great and current San Jose Shark Dan Boyle was recognized during the first intermission Friday. (RELEASE) Miami looks to clinch the CCHA regular-season title this weekend as it travels to Bowling Green, Feb. 12-13 for a two-game set, needing just one win to lock up its third-ever regular-season crown. Men's Basketball (10-13, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) continued its winning way, picking up a pair of road wins last week to extend its winning streak to four games. On Thursday night, senior guard Kenny Hayes scored 16 points, including the game-winning jumper with 0.8 seconds left on the clock, to lift Miami to a 56-54 win at Western Michigan, while junior guard/forward Antonio Ballard logged a double-double. (RECAP) Saturday, the RedHawks shot a season-best 63.2 percent from three-point land, including 10-of-13 in the first half, as four RedHawks scored in double figures, with 22 from Hayes and a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards from sophomore forward Julian Mavunga, to lead Miami to a 74-69 win at Northern Illinois. (RECAP) The 'Hawks wrap up inter-divisional play Wednesday at Millett Hall against Toledo at 7 p.m. before facing the Falcons in Bowling Green Sunday at 2 p.m. Radio broadcasts of both games will begin a half hour before tip-off on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations. It was also announced last Monday that men's basketball would host Southeast Missouri State of the Ohio Valley Conference on Saturday, Feb. 20 as part of ESPN BracketBuster weekend. (RELEASE) The RedHawks and Redhawks will tip off at 2:30 p.m. following the Miami women's game vs. Buffalo.

Women's basketball (6-16, 4-5 MAC) split a pair of home games last week, as sophomore guard Maggie Boyer scored a game-high 23 points Wednesday night to spur the RedHawks to a 69-54 win over Ball State at Millett Hall. (RECAP) Saturday, Western Michigan escaped Millett with a 75-69 victory over Miami, despite a double-double from freshman Kirsten Olowinski, who tallied a career-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. (RECAP) The women are on the road twice this week, completing inter-divisional play Wednesday at Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. before heading to Kent State Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off with the Golden Flashes.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN PHOTO GALLERY
Women's swimming (9-4, 5-2 MAC) defeated Ball State Saturday in Muncie, 183.5 to 113.5, as the RedHawks won 12 individual events and a pair of relays. (RECAP) The men (4-6-1, 2-3 MAC) also knocked off the Cardinals, 140-97, in Muncie, as senior Dave Brown and freshman Alex Reinhardt each posted two wins. (RECAP) It was the final dual meet of the season for both teams, as the women's team next hosts the MAC Championships at the Nixon Aquatic Center Feb. 24-27 while the men compete at the MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. March 4-6.
Women's track saw a pair of school records fall at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame over the weekend. On Friday, redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson broke the 5000m run mark in a time of 16:40.13, besting the previous mark of 16:48.37. (RECAP) Saturday, senior Amanda Mirochna topped the 3000m run time in a record mark of 9:31.98, bettering the previous standard by over six seconds. (RECAP) Both women also earned a NCAA provisional qualifying times with their record mark. The RedHawks next compete at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships, hosted by Bowling Green this weekend, Feb. 12-13.
The men's track and field team returns to action this weekend and will also compete at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships in Bowling Green, as it continues to prepare for its outdoor season.
Women's tennis (3-2) split a pair of road matches in Huntington, W.Va. over the weekend, as Miami downed the WVU Mountaineers, 6-1, including sweeping the doubles point, Saturday, (RECAP) before falling to 67th-ranked and host Marshall, 6-1 on Sunday, as junior Megan Martzolf earned the RedHawks' only win. (RECAP) Miami is next on the court Feb. 20 against Butler at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton.
Softball begins its 2010 campaign this weekend, as the defending MAC Tournament champions play five games in Murfreesboro, Tenn. On Friday, Miami opens against Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. before playing host Middle Tennessee State at 5 p.m. Saturday, the 'Hawks face Tennessee-Martin at 10 a.m. and UMKC at noon and finish up play Sunday at noon against Morehead State. Last Tuesday, Miami was picked as the favorite to win the MAC East division and repeat as Tournament champions in the preseason coaches' poll. (RELEASE)

While many teams were busy competing last week, four teams were looking to the future, as they signed their newest student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on National Signing Day (Feb. 3). Miami gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at football's signing day activities with RedHawk Recruiting Live, a six-hour Wecast live from the football office complex. The complete Webcast can be seen . A blog, including video highlights of each signee, coincided with the Webcast to keep viewers up to date as to the happenings and when all was said and done, football inked 23 players to NLIs. (RELEASE) Women's soccer signed 10 players (RELEASE), field hockey had a class of six recruits (RELEASE) and women's track and field inked two ladies to NLIs, as well. (RELEASE)
