OXFORD, Ohio -- Kelsey Vehr captured Mid-American Conference titles in both the 400 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, greatly influencing Miami University's Friday night charge into second place behind Toledo in the MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at MU's Nixon Aquatic Center.
The RedHawks began the day 110 points behind the first-place Rockets but, thanks to a solid overall effort on Friday, improved their position from sixth to second place and narrowed Toledo's lead to 67 points.
Friday night's action began impressively for Miami, as Vehr set a new pool record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:16.72. Her swim also was an NCAA Divison 1 B cut qualifying time. MIRANDA KALTENBORN was seventh with a clocking of 4:27.88.
The second event of the evening, the 100 butterfly, saw RedHawks place third (Allison Way, B cut time of 54.15), fifth (Maegan O'Connor, B cut time of 54.53), seventh (Brittney Rohr, season-best time of 55.53) and eighth (Nicole Roddenbery, 55.68). Together the quartet racked up 53 team points for Miami.
MU's Sarah Radke placed 15th in the 200 freestyle.
The RedHawks totaled 53 additional points in the 100 breaststroke behind Vehr's first-place finish and four other Miamians in the top 15. Vehr swam to a B cut time of 1:00.62, just off her MAC-record clocking of 1:00.48 set at last year's MAC meet. Vehr's time also was a pool record. Teammate Megan Brunn was third (1:02.24, B cut time), followed by Oxford freshman Katie Arlinghaus in seventh (1:03.71), Claire Fogarty in 14th place (1:04.97) and STACIE CLAGG in 15th (1:05.75).
Three Miamians placed among the top eight in the 100 backstroke, led by freshman Leah Thornton's third-place finish in a B cut time of 54.99. Fellow freshmen Maegan O'Connor (56.02) and Jenny Warmolts (56.39) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Kasey Carpenter (11th place, 56.43) and Nicole Roddenbery (16th place, 58.44) also added valuable team points.
The championships' two top teams, Toledo (3:40.06) and Miami (3:41.32), went one-two in the 400 medley relay, with both units posting B cut qualifying times.
Saturday's final events include: the 200 backstroke, an event in which Miami has the first-, third- and seventh-best times this season (a Toledo swimmer has the season's fifth-best time); the 100 freestyle, in which the RedHawks have the fifth-, sixth- and seventh-best times (Toledo's best effort is eighth); the 200 breaststroke, in which Miami has the first-, third-, eighth-, 10th- and 11th-best times (UT has the second- and fifth-best times); the 200 butterfly, in which MU has the first-, third-, fifth-, seventh- and 10th-best times this season (Toledo is second and eighth); the 1650 freestyle, in which RedHawks have the fifth- and seventh-best efforts (Toledo's swimmers have recorded the first-, second- and fourth-best times); three-meter diving, in which Kelsey Anagnos is a finalist (the Rockets have no finalists); and the 400 freestyle relay, an event in which Miami has the season's best time among all MAC schools (Toledo is third-best).
Saturday's preliminary swimming events begin at 11 a.m. and the finals commence at 7 p.m..
