OXFORD, Ohio - Miami women's swimming and diving qualified six swimmers for finals in Thursday's three individual events at the second day of the Mid-American Conference Championships at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.
The RedHawks are currently in third place in the meet with 60 points. Toledo is first with 80, followed by Ohio with 68. The Rockets had a strong showing with 13 swimmers qualifying for finals while the Bobcats earned seven spots in finals.
The top qualifier for the Red and White was junior Megan Brunn (Mansfield, Ohio), who enters the Thursday night finals as the second-seeded swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:03.07. Freshman Katie Arlinghaus (Oxford, Ohio) will join her in the IM after qualifying 14th with a time of 2:05.76.
Three RedHawks qualified for finals in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Bekka Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) qualified seventh (23.19), while senior Allison Way (Omaha, Neb.) came in 14th (23.64) and redshirt freshman Brittney Rohr (Dayton, Ohio) touched in 16th (23.70).
Rohr's time put her in a tie for the 16th and last scoring spot in finals. After a short break, she faced Stephanie Cholyk, from Eastern Michigan, in a 1-on-1 swim-off to determine the final qualifier.
In the swim-off, Rohr took the early lead off the starting blocks, but Cholyk made up time on the first length as the two swimmers hit the turn together. Rohr had a great turn and came out of her streamline just ahead of Cholyk. At the finish, Rohr had the slight advantage and touched the wall just ahead of Cholyk to secure 16th place for Miami.
Redshirt freshman Claire Dickmann (Edgewood, Ky.) qualified 14th in the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:58.53. Toledo's Jacy Dyer, the defending MAC champion and conference record-holder in the event, qualified first with a pool-record 4:46.56.
In the 1-meter diving prelims, senior Kelsey Anagnos (St. Louis, Mo.) qualified second with a score of 272.70. Freshmen Corrine Bangs (Monument, Colo.) and Danica Roskos (Pennington, N.J.) qualified 11th and 13th, respectively. Bangs scored 223.80 while Roskos tallied 218.60.
The MAC Championships continue Thursday night with finals in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
