While three RedHawk teams opened their 2010 campaigns this past weekend, three other Miami squads used the weekend to raise awareness about breast cancer as part of a Think Pink tripleheader. Baseball and softball hit the diamond for the first time this season and men's golf also competed to open its spring slate, while women's basketball wore pink jerseys and men's basketball and ice hockey wore pink shoelaces on Saturday to support the Think Pink cause. This coming weekend, a pair of RedHawk teams in women's swimming and women's indoor track and field will compete for league titles.
Top-ranked ice hockey (23-5-6, 20-2-4-2 CCHA), having already clinched the CCHA regular season title two weekends ago, split its weekend series with Nebraska-Omaha, winning Friday night 6-2 behind three points from senior Jarod Palmer and four goals over the final two stanzas to break a 2-2 deadlock. (RECAP) Saturday night, the RedHawks saw their eight-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten streak come to a close, as the Mavericks handed Miami just their second CCHA loss of the year by scoring two third-period goals to take a 4-2 decision. (RECAP) The 'Hawks were presented with the CCHA regular-season championship trophy after Saturday's contest. No. 1 Miami rounds out the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Ohio State, hosting the Buckeyes Friday, Feb. 26 at 8:05 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena before traveling to Columbus Saturday night for another 8:05 p.m. puck drop (Note the time changes). Friday night's contest will be televised on CBS College Sports.

Another RedHawk team will go for a championship of its own this week, as the Miami women's swimming team hosts the Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming Championships from Wednesday, Feb. 24 to Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Nixon Aquatic Center. (RELEASE) Tickets are available by calling 1-866-MUHAWKS and will also be sold on the day of the event outside of Nixon Aquatic Center.

Like hockey, men's basketball (12-15, 8-5 MAC) split a pair of games last week, topping the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State, 69-53, Saturday at Millett Hall in Miami's ESPN BracketBuster game, as a quartet of RedHawks reached double figures and junior forward Nick Winbush pulled down a career-high 13 boards in non-league action. (RECAP) Wednesday night, Miami was edged by Akron, 61-56, in a MAC East showdown at Millett Hall, despite a game-high 16 points from senior guard Kenny Hayes and a second-half rally that saw the 'Hawks briefly grab the lead. (RECAP) Miami is on the road twice this week, facing rival Ohio in a "Battle of the Bricks" contest Wednesday, Feb. 24 in Athens before playing at Kent State on Saturday, Feb. 27. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. for both games while radio broadcasts of both games will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations.

Women's basketball (8-18, 6-7 MAC) had just one game last week, taking down Buffalo, 67-52, Saturday at Millett Hall to start the Think Pink tripleheader, as freshman Courtney Osborn scored 21 points and senior Ashleigh Brown chipped in 17. (RECAP) Miami's women also head to Athens this week, as they face the Bobcats Tuesday, Feb. 23 in the "Battle of the Bricks" at 7 p.m. before traveling north to take on Akron Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.

Baseball (1-2) opened its 2010 campaign this past weekend, winning the middle game of a three-game swing in South Carolina. Miami commenced the season Friday at No. 15 Clemson and was blanked 11-0 (RECAP), but rebounded strong Saturday, downing Furman, 23-5, at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. behind seven RBI from junior outfielder Bryce Redeker, who hit for the cycle, and a 6-for-6 day at the plate with five RBI from fellow junior outfielder Adam Eaton. (RECAP) Sunday, the RedHawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Michigan State but the Spartans used a six-run sixth inning to hand Miami an 11-5 defeat, also at Fluor Field in Greenville as part of the First Pitch Invitational. (RECAP) Baseball returns to the diamond next weekend when it travels south again to face Louisiana-Lafayette for a three-game series from Friday, Feb. 26 to Sunday, Feb. 28. Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. ET while Saturday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. ET and Sunday's finale begins at noon ET.

Softball (0-2) also kicked off its 2010 season last week, albeit a week after originally scheduled due to snow in the south, but dropped a doubleheader Sunday at Samford in a pair of pitchers' duals, as the Bulldogs took game one 2-1 before coming back and handing Miami a 4-1 defeat in the second game. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to action this weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn. with five games, facing Rutgers at 10 a.m. and Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. Friday, battling Oakland at 12:30 p.m. and Central Connecticut State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, and wrapping up action on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against host UT-Chattanooga.
Men's golf competed for the first time this spring as well, placing ninth out of 15 teams at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas with a team score of 929, as freshman Blake English was Miami's top finisher, taking 22nd place at 15-over par. (RECAP) The golf team is now off for a month until competing in Orlando, Fla. at the Rio Pinar Invitational March 15-16.
Men's track and field won the Capital University Rick Meindl Last Call meet over 12 other teams on Saturday in Bexley, Ohio in its final indoor meet of 2010, as five RedHawks earned individual victories, including three freshmen. (RECAP) Having completed all three indoor meets allowed by NCAA rules in preparation for outdoor competition, the RedHawks begin their 2010 outdoor season March 27 at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Women's track, meanwhile, took third at the Ball State Quadrangular Friday in Muncie, Ind. with 123 points, despite several RedHawks resting up for the MAC Championships this weekend. Miami won the meet's lone relay and sophomore Alexandra Roberts shattered the school record in the shot put to lead the way. (RECAP) The RedHawks next head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. this weekend, Feb. 26-27, for the MAC Championships, hosted by Central Michigan.

Both Miami's junior and senior synchronized skating teams posted second-place finishes at the Neuchatel Trophy in Neuchatel, Switzerland last weekend. (RECAP) The RedHawk junior team finished second in both the short program and the free skate. The senior team finished second in the short program and third in the free skate but was able to finish second overall in the final standings. All three synchronized skating teams return to the ice when they compete at the U.S. National Championships March 4-6 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Women's tennis (4-2) cruised past Butler Saturday at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton for a 7-0 win, as the RedHawks swept the doubles point and also won all six singles matches without dropping a set. (RECAP) Miami was slated to play Dayton on Sunday but the match was postponed due a scheduling conflict by the Flyers. The RedHawks next host Detroit Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. in Hamilton.
