RedHawks Fall to Kent State on Saturday

KENT, Ohio - A 20-6 run to begin the second half proved to be the difference as Kent State defeated Miami, 84-75, on Saturday afternoon. Rachael Hencke led the RedHawks with 19 points. Miami falls to 7-18 overall and 5-7 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes improve to 16-8 overall and 9-3 in the MAC.

After falling behind 6-1, back-to-back three pointers from Courtney Osborn and Hencke put Miami in front, 7-6. Courtney Reed and Lillian Pitts each hit jumpers as the RedHawks increased the lead to 17-13. Kent State responded with a 10-0 run that put the Golden Flashes in front 23-17 with 9:00 remaining in the half.

Maggie Boyer began to heat up from there, hitting two three-point baskets as Miami went on a 10-0 run of its own to take a 27-23 lead. After Kent State tied the game at 27, the teams traded free throws for the remainder of the period as the Golden Flashes went into the break up 37-35.

The 20-6 run at the start of the second half put Kent State up 57-41 with 10:54 remaining. Reed and Boyer hit layups as the RedHawks attempted to get closer, but the Golden Flashes continued to hit free throws to keep the advantage at 16, 73-57, with 3:25 to go. Hencke and Pitts hit jumpers, while Courtney Reed hit a late three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits, but it was not enough as Kent State came away with the 84-75 victory.

In addition to Hencke's 19 points, Reed put in 16 points, Boyer scored 15 points and Pitts contributed 11. For the game, Miami shot 24-for-54 (44.4 percent), while the Golden Flashes were 21-for-58 (36.2 percent). Kent State was 36-fo-46 from the free throw line and outrebounded the RedHawks, 44-34.

Miami returns to action in one week when it hosts Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 20 at noon. The game is designated as the RedHawks' 'Think Pink' game for breast cancer awareness. It is part of a tripleheader that will feature the men taking on Southeast Missouri State at 2:30 p.m. and the hockey team taking on Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ONN.
