OXFORD, Ohio - Miami Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving welcomes nine teams to Oxford this weekend for the 2010 Miami Invitational. The RedHawks will host Wright State, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Emory, Denison, Oakland and Florida International (women only) in swimming and diving as well as Western Kentucky and Evansville in diving only. The meet will feature 20 events each for the men and women. The top 27 swimmers in the preliminaries advance to finals.
Last year, the women ran away with the team championship, tallying 2321 points while their closest competitors from Florida Gulf Coast scored 1438 points. The RedHawks won six individual events and three relays in the meet. Three returning swimmers accounted for five of the individual wins: current senior Kelsey Vehr won two events in record setting times, sophomore Leah Thornton won two events and fellow sophomore Bekka Westrick added one.
Senior Megan Brunn has led the Red and White this season. She was named MAC swimmer of the week on November 11 and has eight wins on the season. Miami is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC so far this season.
On the men's side, the RedHawks finished in sixth place, but were 108.5 points off of fourth place and 272.5 away from second. Cincinnati finished in fifth, just 2.5 points ahead. Current senior Jason Hass finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly, eighth in the 100-yard butterfly and 12th in the 200-yard IM a year ago. Junior Chris Gunnels was eighth in the 100-yard backstroke and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke and sophomore Alex Reinhardt finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. The other top finishes by returning RedHawks were turned in by junior James Beres, who took second in both diving events.
The meet starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Nixon Aquatic Center at the Miami Rec Center. Prelims on Friday and Saturday begin at 9 a.m. with finals following both nights at 6 p.m.
