Miami jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the game's opening minutes and never let go, leading for the entire game. The RedHawks were able to finish the night with a 75-64 win over Xavier.
Miami's 75 points and 12 assists were both season highs for the RedHawks. It also was the first time this season Miami had more assists than turnovers.
Junior forward Julian Mavunga tallied nine of the RedHawks' first 17 points. Mavunga entered double figures by halftime with 11 points and scored a career high 24 by the time it was all over. Allen Roberts has the only other 20 point performance of the season for Miami when he tallied 20 in the season opener against Towson. Mavunga also grabbed eight boards on the night.
Miami received some clutch shooting in the second half from senior forward Nick Winbush, who tallied 15 points in the second frame and a season-high 17 points. Winbush finished the evening with nine rebounds. Junior guard Chris McHenry's eight points off the bench all came in the second half.
Sophomore guard Orlando Williams scored nine first-half points en route to 11 overall and a career-high six rebounds. It was his second consecutive double-figure scoring effort, which are his only two this season.
Senior forward Antonio Ballard continued to play strong following his return from an injury to his left hand, as he compiled 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. It was the third time in the five games since his return that Ballard has scored in double figures.
For the first time this season, the RedHawks had four shooters in double digits (Mavunga, Winbush, Williams and Ballard).
Miami held the Musketeer's leading scorer, Tu Holloway (25.0 ppg entering Wednesday) to 18 points, his second lowest total of the season. Xavier missed its first seven field goal attempts. The Musketeers finished the first half shooting 7-of-23 (30.4%) and ultimately ended the game with a season low 42.0% shooting. Xavier lost the board battles 33 to 30 and received no points or assists from their bench.
Coach Coles' RedHawks stepped up their game at the free-throw line, shooting a season high 94.4% (17-of-18). Their season average of 66.7% from the line.
