OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's swimming and diving team had to battle back from a 29-point deficit after five events, but the climb was too steep as Buffalo defeated Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks by a score of 165-135 at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.
The Bulls held a 15-2 lead after the first event, then captured first place in three of the next four events to bolster its advantage to 29 points, 61-32.
Miami did have its share of success in the pool with Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) winning the 100 and 200 freestyles in respective times of 46.02 and 1:42.37, Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) capturing the 200 butterfly by four/100ths of a second (1:54.11), LUKE RHODENBAUGH (Cincinnati) taking the 50 free, Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) winning the 500 free (4:38.23) and Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN) finishing first in the 200 IM (1:54.40). RedHawk diver JIMMY BERES (Columbus) also was a winner in the one-meter event.
Runner-up placings went to Brendan Melling (Solon) in the 1000 free and the 200 breaststroke, Whipp in the 100 breast, Hass in the 100 fly, and Chris Hoppler (Germantown, MD) in one- and three-meter diving.
Lindsay reported that his team recorded 29 of its 53 season bests in the meet.
