OXFORD, Ohio-Four RedHawks scored in double figures and another was in double figures for rebounding as the Miami RedHawks men's basketball team, who will play a record 16 regular-season home games this year, opened up action at Millett Hall on Saturday afternoon with a 90-51 exhibition win over the Ohio Northern Polar Bears.
Miami jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game and never looked back. Senior forward Nick Winbush led the RedHawks with 19 points, including an incredible 5-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. The RedHawks shot 55 percent (11-for-20) from three-point range as a team.
Miami played a very balanced game offensively with double digit performances from Winbush, junior forward Julian Mavunga (12), sophomore guard Allen Roberts (11) and junior guard Chris McHenry (10).
Following a 19-2 Miami run in the first half, the RedHawks built a 37-11 lead by the 4:11 mark. During that stretch, McHenry and freshman forward Jon Harris contributed five points apiece.
Ohio Northern point guard Tony Meyer found himself in foul trouble early and the RedHawks limited the Polar Bears' leading scorer to a total of 17 minutes of action. Meyer ended the afternoon with nine points, all from three-point range. Scott Schnelle also scored nine points and grabbed seven boards for the Polar Bears.
A comfortable lead for the entire game allowed Miami head coach Charlie Coles to play all 12 of his players who dressed. Ten of those RedHawks scored in the exhibition and the team scored 31 points off the bench, including 10 from McHenry. Redshirt freshman center Drew McGhee's 11 rebounds and eight points also played a major role in the Miami win. Seven of McGhee's boards were on the offensive glass.
The RedHawks open up regular-season action next week when they face Towson on Friday night at Millett Hall at 6 p.m.
