OXFORD, Ohio - Miami men's swimming and diving opens Mid-American Conference competition against Buffalo on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center at the Miami Recreational Sports Center.
The RedHawks are coming off a weekend during which they fell to Purdue and tied Cleveland State. Purdue spent the entire 2009-10 season ranked in the top 25 and finished 13th at the NCAA Championships. Miami used a furious late-meet comeback to tie Cleveland State after spending much of the meet trailing. In both meets, the RedHawks had strong swims from junior Chris Gunnels and senior Jason Hass.
Gunnels won the 100-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle against Purdue. He also recorded a relay win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Against Cleveland State, the junior won the 100-yard backstroke, finished second in the 200-yard backstroke and helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Hass won the 200-yard IM against the Boilermakers and finished first in the 100-yard butterfly against the Vikings.
The Red and White enter the weekend with a 1-1-1 record overall with the win coming against in-state rival, Xavier in the first meet of the season. Gunnels and Hass are tied for the team lead with four individual wins apiece. Junior Brendan Melling has two individual wins on the season.
Buffalo comes to Oxford with a 2-0-0 record after defeating Pittsburgh and Colgate Oct. 15 and Oct. 23, respectively. Last season, the Bulls topped the RedHawks, 160-131.
