Basketball season tipped off this week, while the football team put itself in position to extend its season Basketball season with a game in December. Congratulations as well to Rachel Patterson, who extended her cross country season with a berth in the NCAA Championship in two weeks. Over the next seven days, Miami gains national exposure with athletic events on ESPNU on back-to-back nights, Tuesday and Wednesday.
On the gridiron, Miami became bowl-eligible for the first time since 2005 with a dramatic 24-21 win at Bowling Green. Trevor Cook kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, keeping Miami in a first-place tie with Temple and Ohio in the MAC East. (RECAP) (PHOTO GALLERY) The RedHawks (6-4, 5-1) hit the road for the final time in the 2010 regular season with a Wednesday night game at Akron. (RELEASE) The game will be televised live on ESPNU beginning at 6 p.m.
Before the football team hits the airwaves, the men's basketball team will be featured in a match-up at Duke on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (RELEASE) The RedHawks opened the regular-season Friday night with a 60-57 victory over Towson at Millett Hall. (RECAP) (PHOTO GALLERY) Miami returns home to host the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic Sub-Regional Nov. 20-22, beginning Saturday night against IUPUI. Green Bay and San Diego State are also participating.
The women's team had a tougher matchup in its season opener Sunday, but stayed with Kentucky before falling 83-71. The No. 9 Wildcats were the highest-ranked team ever to visit Millett Hall and found themselves up by a single basket, 33-31, at halftime. Maggie Boyer tallied 19 points, while Courtney Osborn added 18 points and six rebounds. (RECAP) (PHOTO GALLERY) The RedHawks face a pair of road games this week, travelling to Eastern Kentucky Wednesday and the "other" Miami (Fla.) on Saturday.
The Mid-American Conference portion of the volleyball season concluded with a pair of losses for the RedHawks. They fell 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 24-26) on Friday and 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 12-25, 18-25) at Kent State on Saturday. Against the Bobcats, Cassie Farrell led Miami with eight kills, hitting .583 for the match. Madison Hardy, Lisa Treadway and Michelle Mangia tied for the team lead with six digs each. Dodd recorded a career high five block assists. The next night, Colleen Loftus, Michele Metzler and Amy Raseman each finished with 10 kills for Miami. Metzler also had five blocks (two solo, three assisted). Madison Hardy led the defense with 10 digs, while Kendall had 26 assists. The losses make the RedHawks (10-19, 5-11) the No. 11 seed for the league tournament, which starts Tuesday night at No. 6 Central Michigan. (RELEASE) An upset of the Chippewas would send Miami to Toledo for the quarterfinals on Friday.
No. 3/4 Hockey (6-3-3, 4-2-2-1 CCHA) returned to Goggin Ice Center for a weekend series with then-No. 14 Alaska, but could only gain a split of the series. The RedHawks looked invincible on Friday with Cody Reichard stopping all 24 shots he faced for his second shutout this season and ninth of his career. Carter Camper and Reilly Smith each tallied a goal and an assist. (RECAP) On Saturday, Camper registered another two-point night with a goal and an assist, but the Nanooks scored twice in the final 4:43 to steal the victory. The men's swimming team faced its toughest competition of the young season with meets Friday and Saturday at Ohio State and Kenyon, respectively. Jimmy Beres, Mark Healey and Anderson Whipp all captured individual event victories against the Buckeyes, but it wasn't enough as host Ohio State earned a 144-94 victory. (RECAP) Against Kenyon, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, the RedHawks fell by a score of 132-111. (RECAP). Miami divers recorded 1-2-3 sweeps with Jimmy Beres winning the one-meter competition, while teammate Michael Grainger finished first in the three-meter event. Other RedHawk winners included Chris Gunnels in the 200 freestyle (1:42.04), Luke Rhodenbaugh in the 500 free, and Jason Hass in the 200 butterfly (1:53.08).
The women's team (4-1) was more successful, defeating Kenyon, 168-71 on Saturday. (RECAP) Senior distance swimmer Miranda Kaltenborn and freshman diver Nikki Craft both won two individual events, whil six other RedHawks posted individual victories. Kaltenborn, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., registered individual wins in both the 500 freestyle (5:07.23) and the 1000 free (10:25.69), while Craft, a first-year collegian from Bay Village, triumphed in both the one-meter (284.55) and three-meter (317.70) board events.
Both cross country programs wrapped up the team portion of their seasons Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional in Rochester, Mich. In front of her hometown crowd, senior Rachel Patterson set a school record and earned a fifth-place finish, securing a berth in the NCAA Championship. She led the RedHawks to a seventh-place team finish as well at Katke-Cousins Golf Course. (RECAP) The men's team found a difficult task in its first 10k race of the season as the RedHawks finished a disappointing 18th. Senior Michael Perry finished his cross country career by taking 60th in 31:51.69 to lead the way. (RECAP)
