Miami Comeback Ties Cleveland State 150-150

OXFORD, Ohio - After falling behind early, Miami used a late-meet comeback to tie Cleveland State, 150-150 Saturday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
The RedHawks finished second in the first two events, falling behind 25-11 before battling back in event No. 3, the 200-yard freestyle, sweeping the top three spots in the race with strong swims by junior Brendan Melling and sophomores Alex Reinhardt and Ian Joyce. Melling took the win, touching the wall in 1:44.36, as Miami cut the Cleveland State lead to 28-27.
Gunnels kept the Red and White rolling with a win in the next race, the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 52.18. Freshman Matt McKee and senior Tommy Janszen finished third and fourth, respectively, to help the RedHawks to a 41-33 overall lead.
Cleveland State retook the lead over the next three events, claiming top finishes in each race to jump out to a 74-57 advantage heading into the mid-meet intermission.
Miami battled back in the one-meter diving where junior Jimmy Beres claimed first place with a score of 360.45, cutting the Cleveland State lead to 80-70.
The Vikings won the next four races to stretch their advantage to 130-96 before the RedHawks started their comeback with first- and second-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 51.64 and 52.03 by senior Jason Hass and freshman Mike Cavanaugh, respectively.
Miami's Chris Hoppler claimed first in the three-meter diving followed by Beres in second with scores of 313.58 and 297.75, respectively. Sophomore Anderson Whipp continued the Red and White comeback with a win in the next event, the 200-yard IM, with a time of 156.97. Melling touched in second behind Whipp to help the RedHawks close to within nine points of Cleveland State at 146-137 and set up a crucial final race.
The Miami 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gunnels, freshman Dan Nemeth and seniors John Eick and Mark Healey finished first in a time of 3:08.04 to tie the teams at 150-150.
