Miami Opens Season with 143-114 Win over Xavier

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's men's swimming and diving team opened its season with a 143-114 Homecoming win over in-state rival Xavier Saturday afternoon at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center at the Miami Recreational Sports Center.
Junior Chris Gunnels finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (51.84) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.76) and senior Jason Hass won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly in times of 51.53 and 1:54.24, respectively, to lead the RedHawks.
Freshman Sean Minderlein won the first event he swam as a RedHawk, touching first in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:45.72. Miami also got wins from sophomores Lucas Rhodenbaugh, Ian Joyce and Alex Reinhardt and junior Brendan Melling.
Next up for the RedHawks are home meets against Purdue and Cleveland State. The meet against Purdue starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, while the Cleveland State meet will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
