Comeback Falls Short as Kent Tops Miami

Final Stats

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami field hockey team made a spirited attempt to come back from a 3-0 deficit, but fell just short in a 3-2 defeat to Kent State Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes are 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the MAC.

"I think the result of the game was due to our performing less than 70 minutes, said head coach Jill Reeve. "We need to put 70 minutes together against a great team like Kent. We were a goal behind today because of that. I think we just need to make a few more adjustments, hopefully address those needs and be ready for a big game tomorrow."

Kent State took a 2-0 lead into halftime after scoring on two penalty corners. The Golden Flashes outshot Miami 9-5 in the period.

Things looked even bleaker for the RedHawks when Nicole Leach made it 3-0 in the 37th minute off a nice pass into the box. However, it seemed to serve as a wakeup call for Miami as the team became much more aggressive. In the 42nd minute, Christine Brightwell found the back of the net, taking a shot directly off of Kate Snyder's penalty corner pass. The RedHawks cut the lead to one at 3-2 in the 56th minute when Snyder was able to score on the rebound of a Kylie Landeros pass on yet another penalty corner.

Miami kept up the pressure trying to score the tying goal. The RedHawks even pulled goalkeeper Sarah Mueller for the final two minutes in order to gain an extra attacker. Despite forcing four penalty corner shots in a row at one point, Miami was unable to get the tying goal across and Kent State captured the 3-2 victory.

Brightwell led the way for Miami with seven shots, four of which were on goal. Kent State outshot Miami 17-14 for the game and the teams were even with eight penalty corners apiece.

Trailing in the MAC standings by one game, the RedHawks will look to pull even Sunday when they host 5-1 Ohio at 1 p.m.
