RedHawk Skaters Boast Strong Performances at Midwestern Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa--Competing at the Midwestern Championships Jan. 29-30, Miami University's synchronized skating teams had strong performances in their final competitions in the United States before the U.S. National Championships in March.
On Friday, the RedHawk senior team, skating their short program to music from Romeo and Juliette, posted a score of 69.79 to win the event, topping Evolution (64.63) and Western Michigan (62.21). Miami dominated in Saturday's free skate with its 1940's themed program. The RedHawks seized first place with a score of 123.69, boasting a technical element score of 66.48 and a performance component score of 58.21. Western Michigan finished second in the free skate (95.83), followed by Evolution (84.98).
Miami's collegiate team also had a dominant skate with its Sex and the City themed program. The RedHawks incurred no deductions and produced a score of 110.52 with their first-place effort among the seven-team field. Michigan (92.21), Michigan State (91.22) and Illinois (88.82) followed, respectively.
On Friday, the junior team, skating its short program to "Your Song" from Moulin Rouge, posted a score of 58.73 to finish in second place behind Team Braemar (68.62). The RedHawks topped the Hockettes (55.11) and Windjammers (46.56). Miami also posted a second-place finish in the free skate, recording a score of 93.97 with a program choreographed to Bohemian Rhapsody. Team Braemar also won the free skate event in the junior division with a score of 117.29. Hockettes (91.16) and Windjammers (70.28) followed Miami, respectively.
Miami's collegiate team is off until the U.S. National Championships March 4-6 in Minneapolis, Minn. The RedHawk senior and junior teams have one more competition before nationals. Both teams will skate at the Neuchatel Trophy Feb. 18-20 in Neuchatel, Switzerland.
