OXFORD, Ohio - DAVE BROWN (Lake Orion, MI) made his Senior Day a memorable one by claiming first-place finishes in two individual races and two relay races, but it wasn't enough as Eastern Michigan won its 53rd consecutive Mid-American Conference men's swimming meet with a 164-136 victory over Miami at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Though his RedHawks lost, Coach Pete Lindsay was pleased with his team's effort.
"It was good to see the team keep fighting even though we were outgunned," said Lindsay. "Dave Brown had an excellent senior day meet and set the pace for the sprint crew. The close races that the sophomores and the Class of '13 were involved in showed a strong competitive spirit. We have 32 days to prepare for the conference meet."
Brown captured top placings in the 50 (20.91) and 100 freestyle (45.53), and as a member of the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
Miami's Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) was a three-time winner, claiming first place in the 100 backstroke and with the RedHawk 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. He was the runner-up in the 200 backstroke event.
Freshman Anderson Whipp (Ft. Wayne, IN) won the 200 freestyle and accompanied Brown, Gunnels and Mark Healey (Jenison, MI) on the winning 400 freestyle relay. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle.
Senior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo) also was a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad with Gunnels, Brown and ROB JACKSON (Cincinnati). Jackson also placed third on the 400 freestyle relay team.
Sophomore diver Cameron Horner (Columbus) won the three-meter event and placed second in the one-meter dive. Fellow diver Mike Grainger (Cincinnati) finished three at one meter.
Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) finished second in both the 100 and 200 butterfly.
Third-place finishers for the RedHawks included: DARRIN SMITH (Bossier City, LA) in the 1000 freestyle, Brent Curtis (Cary, IL) in both the 200 freestyle and with the 400 freestyle relay squad; LUKE RHODENBAUGH (Cincinnati) in the 500 freestyle; Brendan Melling (Solon) in the 500 free; and John Eick (Auburn, AL) and Ian Joyce (Hampden, MA) who teamed on the 400 freestyle relay squad.
The RedHawks swim at Ball State next Saturday and then will rest for the MAC Championships on March 4-6.
