OXFORD, Ohio - Miami recorded its highest offensive output in nearly six years Wednesday evening when it routed Northern Illinois, 96-51. Rachael Hencke led the RedHawks with a career-high 24 points on a perfect 10-for-10 shooting night, while Courtney Osborn chipped in 21. Miami improves to 5-15 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies fall to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in the MAC.
The 96 points scored by the RedHawks was the most since scoring 98 against Buffalo on Feb. 28, 2004. The game ranked in the top 10 in school history in several offensive categories. Miami made 40 field goals, which tied for eighth most in a single game in school history. It shot 63.5 percent (40-for-63), which tied for sixth place. The RedHawks 12 three-point baskets, the seventh most all-time and recorded 28 assists, which ranks tied for fifth on the school's all-time single game list.
It was clear very early on that it was going to be Miami's night when Hencke hit two early jumpers, while Osborn hit two three-pointers to stake the RedHawks to a 12-4 lead. The Huskies followed that up with a 6-3 run to pull within five at 15-10 with 13:32 remaining in the half, but that would be the last time the game was close. Osborn hit three more treys and a layup, while Kirsten Olowinski and Hencke hit layups to help the RedHawks expand the lead to 34-12 with 7:57 left in the half.
Erin Wisner and Michelle Oswalt got into the act, each hitting layups as the lead increased to 40-12. Maggie Boyer, normally the team's second leading scorer, turned facilitator during this run with seven first half assists. Hencke, hit a layup and a three-pointer to make the score 47-12 before Northern Illinois finally ended the run with a Kylie York three-point basket. All told, Miami finished with a 32-2 scoring run that last for 7:42. Hencke answered with yet another layup, while Courtney Reed hit a three-pointer to send the RedHawks into the break leading 52-21.
Boyer made sure there would be no letup to start the second half when she hit a layup and three-pointer to push the advantage to 36 at 57-21. Other players started to get involved as Kirsten Olowinski hit a couple of layups while Lillian Pitts put in four short range jumpers to give Miami a 79-38 lead with 7:46 to go.
After the Huskies hit a three-pointer coming out of a media timeout, the RedHawks answered with a 9-0 run off jumpers from Reed, Oswalt, Ashleigh Brown and Briana Dunlap to give them their largest lead of the season (49 points) at 90-41 with 3:46 remaining. Boyer and Dunlap each hit three-pointers to finish Miami's scoring in the 96-51 victory.
Boyer was the other RedHawk in double-figures with 10 points. She just missed out on her first career double-double, finishing with a career-high nine assists. A total of 10 RedHawks scored in the game with eight of them scoring six or more points. Miami shot 66.7 percent from three-point range (12-for-18) and outrebounded the Huskies 37-29. The RedHawks also tied their season high for steals in a game, finishing with 16.
Miami will look to keep its offense rolling when it travels to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. for a 4 p.m. game against Central Michigan on Saturday.
